The associate wealth manager role will have two main focal points in supporting our Director of Investment Research and the Financial Planning team:


·         Investment/Portfolio Research & Tracking:


o   Individual security research and tracking


o   Mutual fund, alternative/private investment, ETF research and tracking


o   Client portfolio return and risk metric tracking


o   Overall portfolio management system maintenance and improvement


o   Marketing/sales material creation


o   Ad hoc research and logistical assignments


·         Wealth Management/Financial Planning:


o   Creation of comprehensive retirement plans


o   Tax planning


o   Assisting senior wealth managers on client communication/relationship maintenance


o   Ad hoc research and logistical assignments

Qualifications/Experience that are required:


·         CFP credential or CFP candidate within 12 months of taking exam


·         Bachelors Degree (preferably in Economics, Finance, Financial Planning)


·         2 - 4+ years of financial planning/client relationship experience


·         1 – 2+ years of investment/portfolio research/tracking experience


·         Candidate must be creative, a self-starter, ambitious, comfortable speaking with clients over the phone and presenting in person, detail oriented, and analytical        


Qualifications/Experience that are beneficial:


·         Working towards or are interested in obtaining the CFA designation


·         Insurance License or prior insurance advising experience


·         Tax planning or preparation experience


·         Series 65 (will be required if not already registered)

Position Summary

Columbia Universitys School of Professional Studies (SPS) has been approved to launch a new Masters of Professional Studies (MPS) degree program in Wealth Management. This program prepares students to become wealth managers who work with high-net-worth individuals, foundations, and endowments to develop wealth and investment strategies. Today, the wealth management industry is growing at a rapid pace and simultaneously evolving to require a new set of skills of wealth management professionals. The industry is at an inflection point and must prioritize transformational change. Restructuring and refocusing are both necessary and difficult. Organizations will need to make key choices about how and where to compete and change in a sustainable way. Transparency is a critical component of the industrys transformation that affects the entire value chain. Demand for transparency is creating opportunities for new entrants, who are proving especially effective at capitalizing on new digital capabilities to offer specific products and services directly to clients. With the rapid growth of the wealth management industry, a talent gap has emerged and as the industry evolves, a new set of skills are required of professionals entering the industry to fill that gap.

SPS is seeking a Director of the Wealth Management Program to lead course development efforts in coordination with the schools Online Curriculum and Instruction team and to administer the program upon its launch (including student academic and career advising, scheduling classes, and identifying faculty). The incumbent will serve as the liaison to the Wealth Management industry and relevant professional communities. They will lead SPS efforts to provide professional development opportunities for students enrolled in the program, and they will contribute significantly to enrollment management efforts.

Responsibilities

Administer the Program - (40%) Duties include:


  • Advise students on their academic and career development


  • Identify adjunct faculty to develop courses and teach in the program


  • Serve as the SPS liaison to the departments and Schools of the University


  • Schedule classes


  • Prepare and administer program budgets


  • Create an active network of faculty doing applied research and teaching in the field throughout the University


  • Address student questions and concerns in partnership with the schools student affairs office


  • Evaluate faculty and make determinations about hiring and course redevelopment as necessary


  • Partner with colleagues in the Career Design Lab to develop a resume repository and to place students in internships and jobs


  • Develop and foster an online community for students and define ways to engage students with the broader SPS, Columbia University, and professional wealth management communities


  • Lead SPS efforts to provide professional development opportunities for students enrolled in the program


Serve as one of Columbia University's liaison to the industry and to the professional communities - (10%) Duties include:


  • Maintain active membership in internationally recognized professional associations in the field


  • Serve on one or more committees within a professional community


  • Build and maintain relationships within the industry, focusing in particular on establishing contacts that will enhance internship opportunities for SPS students and placement opportunities for SPS graduates


Lead program development and course development efforts for the Actuarial Programs - (30%) Duties include:


  • Ensure that the curriculum aligns with industry needs and best practices/industry standards for teaching wealth management


  • Identify faculty to develop courses and ensure that courses being designed to address stated programmatic objectives


  • Develop and implement an improvement/growth plan, working in conjunction with the schools curricular design team to create and deliver courses in an online format


  • Engage in formative and summative programmatic review, with an emphasis on outcomes


Contribute to SPS's Strategic Enrollment Management Efforts - (15%) Duties include:


  • Support all efforts to recruit students, including developing relationships throughout the world to enhance efforts to recruit students and participating in all information sessions


  • Serve on the admissions committee


  • Play an active role in increasing yield rates by meeting with students individually and in groups


  • Represent the program at recruitment sessions that call for professional representation


  • Actively engage with and systematically track students after graduation with an eye on creating an active alumni network/community


  • Reinforce SPS efforts to raise money for scholarship support


Perform other duties as required - (5%)

Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelors degree and/or the equivalent required


  • A minimum of five years of related experience required


Preferred Qualifications


  • Ph.D. strongly preferred


  • Extensive experience working with faculty and administrators at a major research university


  • Active participation in a professional association


  • Teaching experience in an established program and at a major research university also strongly preferred
