The Vet Tech performs all of the duties of a Registered Vet Technician, including providing high-quality, practical veterinary care to a wide range of emergency patients. The primary purpose of this position is to provide secretarial and administrative services to the Executive Vice President (EVP) of the National Association of Federal Veterinarians (NAFV). Key roles include undertaking a range of discrete tasks, as directed by the EVP; acting as secretary to the Association; Monitoring and maintaining the Associations expenses and budget; maintenance/updating of the website; providing assistance on a range of association matters including responding to queries about dues and membership.
NAFV provides a range of services for its members including consultation with government agencies, representation with Congress, mentoring, and providing advice and counsel for administrative and personnel matters.
The incumbent is responsible for the provision of secretarial and administrative services to the EVP including prioritizing workload, arranging functions, events, committee meetings, travel, addressing phone requests from members, completing tasks related to incoming mail, and liaising with a range of internal and external individuals, organizations and government departments. The incumbent undertakes a range of discrete tasks, as directed by the EVP, including investigation and compilation of information; preparing components of the Association’s annual financial statement and liaise with outside organizations and external auditors; monitoring and providing reports on the budget to the EVP and Board of Directors; providing support to the members and Board of Directors, including compilation of information for the preparation of agendas, writing minutes, and taking appropriate follow-up action; coordinating the maintenance/update of Association policies and procedures and details on the website, taking responsibility for ensuring the accuracy of the information; maintaining the membership lists; and conducting an annual survey of veterinarians within the federal government.
The employee reports directly to the EVP. There is no overtime unless authorized by the EVP in writing. The position may be eligible for upgrading to a management position at a later date. Vet assistants are expected to assist the veterinarian(s) in the care of animals. They may assist in helping clean and wrap wounds, check vital statistics, collect samples, and administer medication. A vet assistant is expected to be able to perform basic lab work, including but not limited to urinalysis and blood tests, and assist with procedures such as teeth cleaning, spays, and neuters. Vet assistants help during examinations and surgical procedures by restraining animals when necessary and placing intravenous catheters. Vet assistants are also responsible for stocking examination and surgery rooms with supplies, sterilizing tools, and ensuring that equipment is in working order.
