Canine Specialist

$14-16/hr

PlayBow Dog Daycare

3d ago

San Francisco, CA

Bookmark this job to apply later.

Each morning, right at sunrise, a pack of young and rambunctious puppies drag their parents into our daycare, and can't wait to greet their fellow pup-mates. The pups are full of energy and literally bouncing off the walls. Sometimes they play with each other nicely, but other times, they play too rough. Or they may have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed that morning, and would prefer to stay away from the other dogs that day. On top of that, the pups are prone to having accidents, usually of the pottying variety.

This is where you come in. As a Canine Specialist, you will be in charge of the dogs when they want to play with each other, and when they don't. You'll encourage them to play nicely with each other, but must be ready to step in and interrupt them when they start to play too rough. You'll also need to recognize when a dog is having a bad hair day, and needs your help to keep the other dogs away. Your day will also be filled with constant cleaning, as potty accidents are frequent, and must be cleaned immediately.

All our team members are passionate about caring for pets.  We work together as a team, and are committed to being the best in the industry.  The work is hard, but we always carry a positive attitude, and recognize that our hard work is helping dogs live a happier and healthier lifestyle.  When we do a great job, we give credit to the team members that made it possible.

Key Results Areas:

Safe animal care — handling dogs ethically, and keeping them safe with minimal fights and injuries

Fun animal care — keep dogs engaged and happy through physical activity, mental activity, and dog training games

Cleanliness and sanitation — keeping the facility clean and odor-free

Client interactions — always eager to help our pet parents and provide them with frequent stories about their pup in daycare

Attendance — punctuality and prompt communication about running late and scheduling conflicts

Communication — frequent communication about the dogs, customers, and how to improve our daycare

Additional Requirements:

• Passion and love for all canines
• Great at talking to people
• Always clean and organized
• Comfortable with all dogs, including large dogs
• Able to lift at least 50 lbs
• Perform physically strenuous work all-day
• Must be 18 years of age or older
• Able to start shifts as early as 6:30 AM
• Must be available Tuesday and Thursday mornings
• Takes initiative and is innovative in a start-up type of environment

Previous experience in dog care helpful, but not required. We will provide training in play group management, dog handling techniques, and sanitation.

Compensation range is $14-$16 per hour, depending on performance.  We also provide an opportunity to earn performance-based bonuses and additional income opportunities.

To summarize, we are looking for individuals who find immense joy in interacting with animals and their human pet parents.  We are also looking for individuals who have an appreciation for new businesses, new ideas, and a strong desire to achieve great results in a supportive team environment.

Please send a resume and cover letter to woof*AT*playbowdogs*DOT*com

Please include the following information in your cover letter:
• Detailed availability weekdays and weekends
• Whether you are seeking a part-time or full-time position
• Your experience-level with pets
• Your favorite breed of dog
• Why you would be an excellent addition to our new team

Own a SUV/van/wagon/truck w bed cover? (Sorry no exceptions, unless you buy one)

Cubicle walls seemingly growing taller and taller? Recycled air choking you at your desk? The man got you down?

Fresh out of college and have no idea what to do with your degree? Studying for a grad degree and need to pay the bills?

Grow up with a family dog but can't have one here in The City? Have a dog but don't have the time to give it the attention and exercise it needs?

Simply love our fluffy, shaggy, large and small four legged barking friends?

Then we sure do have an offer for you: walk dogs. Seriously, it'll change your life. Your mind will be opened and your soul unleashed. Keep reading.

Our ever growing core of dogs needs one more off leash adventure leader to get these doggies the attention, exercise, and basic training they need while their owners are off at work. Although we play games with these doggies, the role we take on is hardly a game itself. In fact, it's more like school. Sit, stay, rollover, etc. etc. are awesome and fun to teach simply because dogs and tricks are fun. On the underbelly of it all though is learning and socialization. These dogs learn from you how to be well behaved and disciplined both on their own, with each other, and with their handlers.

So we ask you:

  • Own a SUV/van/wagon/truck w bed cover? (Sorry no exceptions, unless you buy one)
  • Live in SF?
  • Do you LOVE dogs?
  • Athletic, energetic and looking to stay fit?
  • Know the City's layout?
  • Have a cell phone and know how to use it?
  • Able to commit to a year or more?
  • Friendly, outgoing, and customer savvy?
  • Have extreme patience?!
  • Eager to learn? To teach?

If you can rightfully answer "yes" to each and every of the preceding questions, apply now. These are all "must have" qualities to keep our company at the forefront of the industry. Even though these are seemingly basic, they are at the heart of what we do. Be not mistaken, we are top tier and need you to be, too. We won the #1 Dog Walking company in SF and the #1 Dog Walker in the Bay Area in two separate publications. We didn't get there by employing people who half ass it.

If you're still reading, you're probably looking for this last set of details: MONEY!!

Trainee$14/hr when riding along or doing after hours training meetings$19/hr when driving alone

Dogtoral Candidate $20/hr

Puppy Professor - $21

Dean Of Dogs - $22/hr

Assistant Field Manager - $23/hr

Field Manager - $30,000 annual salary (~$1,150/paycheck)

Chief Happiness Officer - $32,500 annual salary ($1,250/paycheck)

Chief Operations Officer - $37,700 annual salary ($1,450/paycheck)

You shadow for a week, taking in $14/hour. Essentially you do nothing but ride along, meet the dogs and coworkers, and learn the basics of the daily routine. Not bad at all. Week #2 is a bit different, so we up you to $18/hour. You start picking up your own packs of dogs and meet up with me and other staff at our walking locations - typically Crissy Field and the forest at the Presidio. You start keeping track of your mileage and will be reimbursed gallon for gallon. You learn.  You're bumped up to $19 for 2nd leg of training, and after your training is complete, typically the first two months of employ, $20/hour. You'll get your dog walker certification ($800 you don't have to spend) and ready to go. The longer you stick with it, the more you involve yourself in our company mission, the more you demonstrate your willingness to work hard and grow professionally, the more you learn, the more you earn.

Typical shifts last five to six hours Monday-Friday, you start in the late morning and are home by early evening, roughly 10-4. For us, there is no such thing as working nights, weekends, or holidays. However, good extra income is available to you through boarding, solo walks, and eventually private lessons on your own personal schedule as needed by our clientele. If you can sit dogs you can make thousands in cash.

If you've made it this far simply describe your interest in a convincing email that grabs our attention as to why you want/would own this position. LIST A FEW REFERENCES. At least one must be a former employer. Your email is your ticket, so craft it well. Professional submissions will be looked at. We look forward to hearing from you.

  • The rate walkers are paid ranges between $6.46-$8.50 per HALF HOUR visit (equivalent averages to around $13-16 per hour).
  • We are looking for candidates whose priority is providing quality care to our furry clients and their owners. If money is your primary motivation, this may not be the job (nor the industry) for you.

Is this a good fit for you? We are looking for candidates who:

  • Are organized, dependable, trustworthy, timely, and professional.
  • Have great customer service and communication skills.
  • Are team players who can handle last-minute changes and requests from clients.
  • Are able to work independently and responsibly.
  • Enjoy being outside in all four seasons and the weather that comes with them! (Rain, snow, heat, cold, wind...)
  • Are interested in long-term work. We view dog-walking as a career choice and do not often hire just seasonally or temporarily. If you are looking for short-term work just to "get by" between other jobs, we are not the right fit.
  • Love Animals! You don't have to have any animal work experience, but we find it is helpful if you have at least had pets of your own before.

Qualifications

  • Background & References: You need to be at least 21 years old, able to pass a background/criminal check, and have at least 3 references.
  • Physical Requirements: You need to have excellent dog-handling skills and intuition to walk and control dogs of all sizes and breeds. You also need to handle the activity level of walking dogs for 2-6 hours per day (you choose the amount).
  • Supplies & Equipment: You need to have: (1) a reliable insured automobile and a valid driver's license (2) a computer with access to the internet, (3) a printer, (4) a working cell smartphone (preferably with texting).
  • Location: Because Heaven Sent does not compensate for travel time/commute, it is best if you live in or near one of our service areas (Wilmette, Evanston, or Kenilworth).

Interested in applying? Please reply to this posting to tell us a little about yourself, including your answers to the following questions:

  1. Do you have your own car?

  2. Are you over 21 years old?

  3. Where do you live?

  4. What appeals to you about working with a dog walking team?

  5. Please describe your personal pet experience.

  6. Are you allergic to cats? Do you enjoy working with cats?

  7. Are you currently working? (List where you work, location, and what hours. If you are not currently working, please list your last place of employment and why you left.)

  8. Are you a student/grad student? During what hours do you take classes/teach?

  9. Do you have a computer? Access to internet? Access to a printer for daily use?

  10. Do you have a cell phone/smart phone? Texting ability? Data Plan?

  11. What hours and days are you available to work with us?

  12. What is your estimated duration of employment in this type of position? 3-4 months, 4-6 months, 6-8 months, 8 months to 1 year, or longer?

We look forward to hearing from you!
