Clean Water Action is looking for full time, long-term activists to help protect our environment. This is a great opportunity for recent graduates!

DESCRIPTION As a Clean Water Action Community Organizer, you will work on grassroots environmental and public health campaigns. This position involves environmental education, petitioning, fundraising, and political organizing. 

You will learn strategic communication and analysis skills and gain experience in grassroots lobbying, nonprofit management, political organizing, and fundraising. Our staff consists of committed, professional, highly skilled activists. New employees receive extensive training and continuing support on issue knowledge and campaign skills. All staff members receive regular updates given by political staffers within our organization. 

You will gain a strong sense of pride in knowing you are making a difference, knowledge of effective grassroots organizing and campaign strategies, and strengthened communication skills.

Requirements include an ability to thrive in and support a team dynamic, a positive attitude, strong verbal communication skills, interest in environmental and public health issues, motivation, and energy.  Campaign experience is helpful but not required. 

Daily responsibilities include: 

▪ Mobilizing communities by political district. Speaking with community members at their homes and getting them involved in CWA campaigns. 

▪ Educating community members and raising awareness of environmental and public health issues. 

▪ Raising funds to keep Clean Water Action independent and self-sustaining. 

▪ Generating letters to government representatives. 

▪ Working to elect clean water advocates to public office.

Greenstand (greenstand.org) builds a full mobile stack for reforestation tracking and incentivizing tree planting.  Our platform enables individuals living in abject poverty to receive compensation for helping to solve the climate crisis by replanting forests.  We would like to hire a motivated computer science student to solve and code specific API, cloud, and/or GIS requirements and help increase our velocity.  We a remote team with no fixed office, but our VP of Engineering lives in Rockridge, Oakland and we hope to hire a UC Berkeley student to work directly under his supervision.  The right candidate will have opportunities to gain exposure to nodejs API development, cloud deployment (ansible + digital ocean), AWS queue services, postGIS database, GIS Desktop, and/or other technologies as appropriate.  The right candidate need now have high familiarity with all or any of these technologies, but will be a quick learner and an industrious problem solver.    The internship is 5-10 hours per week, ongoing.  Come help us use technology to solve _real_ problems and make progress where it truly counts: for the environment and for economic equality.

Primary Responsibilities


  • Work in the KRR Production team. Also work on Machine Learning infrastructure

  • Work closely with Translation Science team on researching and evaluating new concepts and ideas. This may include exploring domain knowledge content from Translation Science, proposing the most optimal ways to represent the key concepts and reasoning in a systematic scalable way, populating the knowledge base, and enhancing logical connections between food & supplement ingredient content, microbiome results, as well as self-reported conditions and dietary preferences of Viome customers or research study participants

  • Design and build prototypes based on current technology utilizing AI and KRR techniques

  • Design of future Viome KRR and AI systems

  • Build Viome Ontologies for various domains

  • Design, re-use and implement a solid workable Services Architecture

  • Create and deliver professional presentations and design notes designed for VP of engineering, other peers, and management

  • Generate effective written reports that summarize key data and project updates

  • Work with other Production team members to fulfill new AI-related requirements

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:


  • Demonstrable research skills with a wide range of KRR techniques and methodologies

  • Solid background on logic programming (e.g., Prolog and/or Description Logic) and AI

  • Experience with Java

  • Experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, graph databases such as RDF triplestore, and their corresponding query languages such as SQL and SPARQL

  • Ability to build prototypes and systems with knowledge of all steps within the design process: conception, planning, initiation, and implementation

  • Ability to deliver prototype implementations

  • Ability to deliver production ready systems

  • Ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions

  • Experience working with Open Source Software

  • Self-motivated and ability to work independently as well as being a team player

  • Ability to teach and mentor other software professionals.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to create professional presentations and present to peers and management. Effective written and verbal communication skills adapted to the intended audience

  • Experience with 3rd party web APIs e.g. REST

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree or higher degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or Software Engineering

Preferred Knowledge and Skills


  • Experience with JENA or similar declarative programming languages

  • Experience with cloud technology (AWS preferred) and designing solutions that leverage its unique advantages

  • Experience with Natural Language Processing algorithms

  • Ability to quickly master Machine Learning algorithms

Our after school program "Toyology: Science Through Toys" is seeking dedicated and creative part-time teachers and assistants to facilitate STEM-based learning in local elementary schools throughout the Bay Area. Our staff have the opportunity to work with 50+ elementary schools across the Bay Area from Walnut Creek to San Francisco. This job is a perfect opportunity for college students, teachers in training programs, retired teachers, and individuals who love working with children.

Teacher Responsibilities


  • Manage a class of 15-25 students along with an assistant

  • Attend an hour long weekly training and supply pick-up at our office in Castro Valley

  • Teach science concepts from a lesson plan

  • Instruct children how to build projects from step-by-step instructions

  • Conduct roll call and sign students in and out of the class

  • Interact with parents, teachers, and school staff

  • Set up and clean up the classroom

  • Transport all materials to and from class

Assistant Responsibilities

Multiple public and private elementary schools located throughout the Bay Area. Schedule 


  • Our staff work at the same time/days of the week from week to week over a three month period. Five classes a week, or one class per day from Monday to Friday, is the maximum class schedule for our staff

  • Classes are an hour in length, with fifteen minutes of prep and fifteen minutes of cleanup. In total, our staff works for an hour and a half for each day that they are on the schedule

  • Start times for classes can vary anywhere between 1PM and 4PM, depending on the school

Requirements 


  • Must drive and have a reliable vehicle

  • Teachers must be willing to pick-up, drop-off, and transport supplies in their vehicle

  • Must have prior experience working with children

  • Background in education and prior experience teaching is a plus

  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and experience managing a classroom

  • Must be organized, detail-oriented, energetic and flexible

  • Able to communicate, multi-task and resolve issues and challenges creatively

*Please note, this position could be part-time or full-time*Senior Project Engineer & QA/QC CoordinatorThe Senior Project Engineer & QA/QC Coordinator is responsible for leading the design, reporting, engineering, and quality control of civil engineering projects from inception to completion in accordance with the project scope. Work will include the design and applicable permitting of site layouts, grading plans, utility systems, stormwater management, soil erosion and sedimentation control plans, and street improvements on a variety of projects including residential, office, retail, restaurant, infrastructure, and renewable energy for private and public clients. Primary Duties & Responsibilities:



  • Camera maintenance including white balance, lens cleaning and prompter

  • Maintains station operation through preventative and corrective maintenance.

  • Establishes and follows routine maintenance procedures and schedules for all broadcast equipment.

  • Ensures station compliance with rules and regulations applicable to FCC, local, state and federal laws.

  • Testing remote connections with clients and guests for Friday Show

  • File Management of audio and video equipment (Backups and firmware updates where necessary)

  • Generator Maintenance and fuel delivery (Weekly Check)

  • Repairs and Maintenance to equipment as needed on a daily basis

  • Wheatstone audio system configuration and maintenance

  • Configuration and Maintenance of video system components including: Grass Valley Router, Chyron, Harmonics Playback System, ClipJockey, ClearCom Intercom, Grass Valley Distribution System, File Playback Decks, Telos VX Phone System, Time Code generation and distribution, Reference Signal Distribution, RF Television System.

  • In Charge of building TV’s throughout, making sure there set-up to run The Kim Komando Show.

  • Help with file transfer data from time to time

  • Knowledge of Edit Bay Equipment (Adobe Premier)

  • Robocam and Camera Shading during Friday Show

  • Test Wireless headphones Friday morning prior to show

  • File preparation and playback automation setup for Saturday Playback
