Job Summary:    To be successful as an Optician, you should have strong customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills. You should be able to recommend specialized eyewear such as for sports and occupational use, as well as informing on and recommending tints and anti-reflective coatings.


Education and Experience:

1.      High school diploma or equivalent.

2.      ABO Certified, Office Word and Excel knowledge Preferred

3.      Two to five years’ experience working in optical shop.

4.      Working knowledge of inventory management, eyewear sales, patient insurance coverage and financial management.

5.      Excellent customer service and teamwork ability.

6.      Optical Sales experience is required.

1.      Obtaining patient prescriptions from Optometrists and Ophthalmologists. Interpreting optical prescriptions.

2.      Checking patient’s vision insurance coverage, eligibility and completing necessary prior authorizations. Filing online or paper vision insurance claims for materials.

3.      Assisting customers in selecting frames according lifestyle, coordinated frames with facial and eye measurements and optical prescription.

4.      Recommending lens coating such as antireflective, tint, and specific lens material.

5.      Preparing work orders for the Optical Technicians to use to manufacture the lenses. Ordering lenses from contracted optical labs. Checking lenses on delivery to ensure that they meet the required ANSI specifications.

6.      Dispensing and adjusting and fitting frames according to the prescriptions and customer's specifications, as well as to suit the customer's face.

7.      Using specialized equipment, such as pliers, calipers, lensometers, and lens guages.

8.      Educating customers on how to wear and maintain eyeglasses.

9.      Keeping inventory on frames to ensure product variety and customer satisfaction.

10.  Maintaining communication between sales reps and management.

11.  Performing administrative duties, such as managing prescriptions, customer records, insurance claims and verifying statements.

12.  Ensures that patients are properly educated regarding their vision prescription and available options.

13.  Maintains emphasis on profitable operations while satisfying patient needs.

14.  Maintains appropriate standards of quality, honesty, and patient service.

The Dispensing Optician will primarily assist patients in selecting the eyeglass frames, lenses and lens options that best suit their needs. The Optician will also be responsible for obtaining accurate measurements and prescription information for eyewear. Once the glasses are complete, the Dispensing Optician is responsible for final inspection and dispensing the glasses to the patient. Paid vacation and holidays.

  • Maintain knowledge of current sales and promotions as well as policies regarding payment, returns, exchanges

  • Compute and process payment transactions/refunds using our Point of Sale system

  • Perform other tasks as assigned

  • Create and maintain patient files, following company and HIPAA policies.

  • Input customer information into the computer system

  • Assess and interpret patient’s needs/wants based upon prescription requirements, facial features, lifestyle, and occupation, and suggest most appropriate products (i.e. frames, lens type, coatings)

  • Take all the necessary measurements.

  • Prepare work order for lab ensuring all pertinent information is listed (i.e. patient information, prescription, lens size/type, measurements, special tinting or coating, etc.)

  • Educate patient on how best to care for their glasses

  • Adjust/repair damaged frames, replace nose pads and missing screws

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Experience working in the optical industry is required

As an Optician, you will work with patients to find the most suitable eyewear for their needs.  You will recommend specific eyewear, take measurements, fit, order and adjust glasses, and teach patients to properly wear and care for their glasses and contact lenses.

As a Patient Care Rep you will work with patients to get them checked in for their appointment, including all aspects to prepare the doctor to start the exam. You will also answer phones and make reminder calls for upcoming appointments.

·         Taking patient information and measurements to assure optimum glasses performance.

  • Communicate with patients regarding their insurance benefits and pricing.

  • Ensure complete patient confidentiality as established by the practice policies and HIPAA.
