We have a Toddler Teacher position open. It is a full-time position (8:30 A.M - 5:00 P.M) position serving children ages 3 - 5 years old. We have well-equipped classrooms and an outside environment which includes a large playground with lots of area to run, climb and ride bikes. Elan offers a self-paced program that teaches the children responsibility, teamwork and of course all the basics.

The ideal candidate can take an active role in helping children and enjoy doing so. This position is responsible for the care of the students, managing diaper changing, potty training, sanitizing the classroom, cleaning after meals and activities and coaching the children as they develop self-help skills.

At the end of the day our smaller groups become one large group with activities for all children combined, ages 2-5 yrs.

Education and Training Requirements:


  • 12 Early Childhood Education (ECE) units required


  • Preschool Teaching experience is preferred

Flexibility is key, as we often ask our English tutors to help students with History or other Humanities related subjects. Prior tutoring experience is preferred and a bachelor’s degree, or ongoing study towards a degree, is required. Experience tutoring History (World, US, Euro) and Government is highly desirable. Experience tutoring SAT, ACT, and SAT II is also highly desirable. All candidates will be given an assessment test in their subject prior to interviewing.

Project Ember is an artistic engineering camp where kids collaboratively design and build interactive projects at a scale you have to see to believe. Every week of camp has a surprise theme, but beyond some guiding constraints, our campers have the creative freedom to design their very own projects. Without blueprints or kits, our campers and Collaborators (counselors) spend the week designing, prototyping, testing, iterating, and refining a project. And then we celebrate what we've made with a huge demonstration day. The magic of Project Ember lives at the intersection of daring creativity and inclusive collaboration. Kids are challenged to take big creative risks without guaranteed success and to work together to accomplish something bigger than they could imagine doing on their own. ABOUT THE JOB

Work with kids ages 8-14 to engineer larger than life art, structures, puppets, vehicles, mechanisms and more. Create a community of learners who celebrate mistakes, honor sincerity, and value the power of both the individual and the team. Use a huge range of supplies and tools from standard arts and crafts, to power tools and dimensional lumber. You don’t need to be perfect to apply; come with either experience making rad stuff or experience working with kids. While both is ideal, we want our team to be a mix of educators, makers, artists, facilitators, and engineers.

Your primary role will be supporting and guiding kids through the complex process of working on a team to make something bigger than themselves (figuratively and literally). You will be a teammate, doing the work right alongside the kids. You will be a facilitator, making sure every voice is heard and guiding the kids through compromise and towards consensus. You will be a leader tilting the environment towards engagement, and the project towards completion. At other times you will have to hold firm boundaries that keep kids physically and emotionally safe. Above all else, you will help create a space where kids at our camp feel seen, heard and loved.

PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS


  • Build large-scale projects with kids utilizing power tools (we will teach you how!)

  • Facilitate daily design sessions, establishing the scope of the project and the daily goals (we will teach you how!)

  • Uphold Project Ember’s tool use and risk management policies

  • Maintain an emotionally and physically safe environment

  • Model and teach inclusivity

  • Facilitate meaningful collaboration and mediate conflict among campers

  • Bandage scrapped knees, have heart to hearts, and celebrate vulnerability

  • Host games and program transitions

  • Share stories with families about their children

  • Co-develop curriculum and pick the summer's project themes with the rest of staff

  • Attend regular meetings focused on skills development and specific camper needs

  • Keep the site clean, orderly, and safe

  • Supervise before care, aftercare, snack, lunch and park time (though never all of them in a single day)

  • Regularly submit camper notes (these help us maintain multi-year relationships with alumni and track things like projects they worked on and delightful moments they were apart of)

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS


  • You have started and completed a significant project of your own volition AND/OR

  • You have experience working with children as a teacher, camp counselor, or mentor (informal experience welcome)

  • You care deeply for the well-being of young people and know how to take care of yourself so that you are able to meet their needs during program hours

  • You are an excellent communicator and are comfortable giving and receiving feedback

OUR MISSIONGirls to Women is dedicated to supporting girls as they design their futures for successful womanhood.

OUR STORYGirls to Women partners with Mid-Peninsula families, other local youth development agencies, and local schools to provide year-round programming which supports the healthy development of 75 low-income girls and young women ages 6 to 25. At the core of our youth development approach is respect for the abilities, knowledge and potential of each girl we serve.

Our girls thrive among the positive, culturally-reflective female role models they meet through Girls to Women. With an approach which sees the girls' unique attributes and 'her stories' as cues to help us best serve them and their families.

Girls to Women’s Rising Voices Program provides media and visual Arts workshops to young women of color from East Palo Alto and neighboring areas. We believe that supporting young rising voices through art, heals and transforms a community.

Rising Voices works during and after school, in shelters, juvenile detention centers, and young mothers programs. Workshops are lead by professional artists, who teach through a lens of social and racial justice, and honor topics and stories that matter most to young women.

POSITION OVERVIEW Girls to Women Teaching Artists facilitate one to two Rising Voices workshops a semester.  We are hiring for the 2019-2020 school year, with additional opportunities for future employment. To be considered for this position, candidates must have some availability between the hours of 10am-6pm, and access to reliable transportation.

As representatives of Girls to Women in the classroom and the communities they serve, teaching artists share a commitment to our mission and social and racial justice values.

Teaching artists can expect to teach 2-5 hours/week, depending on availability and experience, with starting compensation of $30 per hour for teaching, professional development, and all pre-approved administrative work. 

RESPONSIBILITIESTeaching & Lesson Planning● Create a collaborative culture of learning that supports youth in their development as storytellers and artists● Connect young people’s stories to a broader audience through a culminating showcase for families and communities at the workshop site● Design a multi-lesson workshop using Girls to Women’s methodology grounded in Creative Youth Development. Workshops must weave first-person storytelling through art forms, including: creative writing, journaling, photography, animation, comic books, portraiture, etc.● Teaching artists working during the school day will provide professional development in arts integration for classroom teachers outside of classroom time, and develop arts integrated lessons in collaboration with classroom teachers

Workshop Administration● Build positive relationships and communicate on a regular basis with all program partners including school and/or community based organization site staff, students’ families, and other Girls to Women staff to ensure quality spaces of learning● Attend a pre-workshop meeting with site staff● Set up before and clean up after each workshop● Complete and submit program paperwork, including lesson plans, student attendance, media release forms, timesheets, expense reports, final program reports, and student surveys in a timely manner● Support outreach efforts to ensure student engagement in programs as needed● Routinely move equipment and art supplies weighing up to 50 pounds for various workshop and events ● Check in with Program Director on a regular basis through email or phone to report progress of workshop and support needed 

QUALIFICATIONS● At least 2 years experience:- as an active artist (photographer, animator, illustrator, comic artist, theater, etc.)- as a teaching artist, preferably related to supporting youth in sharing their own stories- working in public schools or community-based settings with diverse groups of young people (including youth identified as English Language Learners, low-income, and/or underrepresented) between ages 5-14 ● Proficiency with Apple operating systems and Google Apps

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR TEACHERS

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR TEACHERS

▪ Experience in individual and collaborative curriculum development

▪ Experience with trauma-informed classroom and restorative justice

▪ Two years of credentialed teaching experience in an urban setting

▪ Advanced degree in subject-matter content or education

▪ Familiarity working with Common Core standards

▪ Experience with assessments for and of learning ( standards based grading)

▪ Experience with gradual release instruction (i.e. “I do - We do - You do”) and student-centered

instructional practices

TEACHER JOB RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS

▪ Teach five sections of a course/courses within your discipline and one section of Advisory

▪ Attend and participate fully in weekly Professional Development and weekly or bi-weekly coaching meetings with an instructional coach (all teachers at ARISE have a dedicated instructional coach)

▪ Participate in professional development opportunities to develop skills and expand scope of curricular and instructional knowledge and understanding (including school-wide professional development retreats, critical inquiry group participation, opportunities with school partners, and outside individual professional development)

▪ Provide regular feedback to students about their progress, including completing quarterly progress reports and updating the online grade book weekly

▪ Participate in “Academic Familia” grade level meetings to problem solve student issues and build out collaborative, cross-curricular projects

▪ Develop project-based “Rigorous Summative Assessments” in alignment with our ​Graduate Profile

▪ Collaborate with teachers/peers and our Adelante Student Support team to provide a consistent academic support system for all students

▪ Participate in peer observations with other teachers to heighten the effectiveness and experience of our community of teachers as learners

▪ Align course content with our Public and Community Health Pathway

▪ Provide academic support outside of class to our students (e.g. tutoring, mentoring, homework assistance, including one afternoon each week assisting with required study hall hours) at least twice per week.

▪ Contribute to teaching a two-week beyond the classroom course during our Post Session, which runs for the final two weeks of the school year

▪ Attend and support additional beyond the classroom activities including Advisory retreats, College Tours, Days of Service, Student-led conferences, and Exhibition nights)

CTE SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS

▪ Attend and participate as needed in weekly Professional Development that is aligned with school wide priorities or CTE pathway

▪ Collaborate with science teacher to ensure that Public and Community Health curriculum and best practices are being utilized

▪ Participate in monthly advisory board meetings to review Public and Community Health pathway initiatives and best practices

▪ Commitment to aligning course content with our Public and Community Health Pathway

RESPONSIBILITIES AS AN ADVISOR

▪ Provide academic, socio-emotional, personal guidance, and support to a grade-level homogenous Advisory class of 15-22 students, including support towards fulfilling graduation requirements (e.g. Defenses, community programs, cultural immersion, etc.)

▪ Exemplify and reinforce the ARISE Vision, Mission, and Core Values in and beyond Advisory

▪ Collaborate with students, parents/guardians and other teachers to address the academic and

social needs of advisees; provide consistent follow-up with/for students, parents/guardians and

teachers in the role of Advisor

▪ Facilitate the maintenance of student portfolios

▪ Hold a focused independent reading time space 3x per week during Advisory

▪ Coordinate bi-annual student-led conferences

▪ Conduct home visits to meet with advisees and their families as necessary

TEACHER LEADERS

We at ARISE are excited to bring on experienced teacher leaders to help realize our ARISE Mission and Vision. We encourage teachers to participate in leadership roles in school development and are provided a stipend for doing so. Such duties include: operations, and/or administration, internship coordinator, technology coordinator, data coordinator, advisory coordinator, Academic Familia lead, etc.
