The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) seeks a highly skilled, enthusiastic, articulate and motivated Family Law Staff Attorney with 3-5 years of experience beginning October 1, 2020 (some flexibility in start date is possible). This position will focus on family law litigation (primarily appellate litigation), legislation, policy, and public education, and will work with our Family Law Director. This position will also work on our efforts to abolish and replace the existing child welfare system while also providing technical assistance to attorneys representing parents involved in the child welfare system. 

This is a full-time, exempt position.

NCLR is based in San Francisco, CA, but any remote location within the U.S. will be considered. Currently nearly all staff are working from home exclusively, but we hope to reopen our office in San Francisco at some point in the future.  

Specific duties and responsibilities: 

Work with NCLR’s Family Law Director to:


  • Handle all aspects of litigation in precedent-setting cases related to recognition of family relationships and parental rights, including legal research and drafting of primarily appellate level briefs.

  • Provide technical assistance to attorneys representing parents in trial level family law and child welfare proceedings.

  • Build and support an LGBTQ legal advocacy coalition to support the upEND movement to abolish and replace the current child welfare system (more information: https://cssp.org/ourwork/project/upend/))). 

  • Monitor and research issues related to legislation, regulations, and policies affecting LGBTQ parents and their children, people acting as surrogates, and sperm and egg donors.

  • Provide trainings for attorneys and public education.- Develop and update publications and other legal resources.

  • Support NCLR’s family law networks including NCLR’S National Family Law Advisory Council and LGBT Family Law Institute (a joint venture with the LGBT Bar Association), and participate in family law and reproductive justice coalitions.

  • Represent NCLR's positions to the media and the public generally.  

Qualifications: 


  • Law Degree, license to practice in the U.S. jurisdiction where you live, and 3-5 years litigation experience that includes legal research and high-quality legal writing.

  • A high level of independence and initiative, good judgment, excellent speaking and writing abilities.

  • Ability to produce the highest caliber legal work, creativity, and a willingness to work collaboratively both within the organization and with other groups and outside co-counsel.

  • Ability to respond to internal and external inquiries in a timely manner and complete all products in advance of deadlines, ensuring adequate time to review and rework by Family Law Director, Legal Director, and outside co-counsel.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.- The ability to talk about legal and other complex issues in clear, persuasive terms for non-lawyer audiences.

  • A demonstrated awareness of and commitment to intersectional advocacy and broader social justice issues, including racial and economic justice, feminism, reproductive justice, and an understanding of the multiple communities NCLR represents. 

  • Enthusiasm for the rights of LGBTQ parents and their children, as well as the work of NCLR generally, including a demonstrated commitment to public interest legal advocacy and issues that impact families specifically. 

  • Experience with the child welfare system and/or representing parents in family law matters is a plus.

  • Willingness to travel in the event it is necessary. NCLR currently anticipates limiting travel to all but essential case travel at a minimum through at least the end of 2020. Some case appearances in other states may be necessary but unlikely for this position. 

Salary and Benefits 

This position is paid according to our regular attorney scale. 

Salary is non-negotiable and based on years since becoming barred (3-5 years): $76,000-83,000.

  • Request the title policy from underwriters upon receipt of each recording and delivery of same to the appropriate parties to the transaction.

  • Knowledge and ability to perform escrow assistant and basic escrow offer duties in order to track and payout water escrows held at closing.

  • Scan / Upload files to software as needed, including lender packages, closing documents and final scan complete closing file.

  • Work directly with the borrower or the lender, providing exceptional customer service.

  • Perform other duties as needed and assigned.

Intake Screener/ receptionist must have the ability to handle busy phones with finesse and sensitivity to applicant situation. Intake Screener/ receptionist must be organized, use good judgment and common sense and pay attention to detail. Intake Screener/ receptionist must have computer skills and knowledge of standard office equipment, such as telephones, computers, copiers, and others. Intake Screener/ receptionist will use active listening skills and collect the information in a professional and caring manner as well as ensuring compliance with all company policies and procedures. We are looking for upbeat, energetic people with outgoing personalities; Intake Screener/ receptionist must have a passion for helping others, have a strong work ethic and be responsible and reliable. 


 


B.   Specific Duties and Responsibilities: 


 


1.   Welcomes and greets everyone who walks into the office. Informs  advocates promptly of the arrival of scheduled appointments. Ensures that  appointments receive an application for services and a copy of the client  grievance policy. Assists in the completion of the application for legal services if necessary.   


 


2. Enters applicant information into the Case Management System consistent with ICLS policies and priorities. Reviews the information and makes a preliminary determination of applicant eligibility.   


 


3.   Receives, opens, date stamps and routes all incoming mail to staff according to office procedures. Prepares the office daily outgoing mail with sufficient postage and ensures timely requests for loading the postage meter. 


 


4.   Answers telephone calls, takes messages for office personnel, or transfers the call. 


 


5.   Obtains the applicant’s signature attesting to U.S. citizenship, or when the applicant claims legal status, obtains the necessary information to document client eligibility.  


 


6.  Interviews applicants by phone and in person to obtain or verify basic applicant demographic and financial information needed to complete the intake. Obtains specific basic facts from applicants concerning their legal problems, including the name of the court and case number, if an action is pending; relevant dates. Obtains the relevant documents needed by the advocate attorney at his/her interview with the client. 


 


7.   Schedules applicant appointments.  Calls the previous day to remind the applicant or client of the appointment date and time. 


 


8.   Performs  routine  clerical  tasks  such  as  typing,  filing,  faxing,  photocopying, scanning, etc.  Other office tasks as assigned by the manager. 


 


9.   Maintains and updates a front desk Client Resource Notebook to include legal as well as social service referrals.  Provides appropriate referrals to ineligible clients or callers. 


 


10. Maintains the client lobby and receptionist area on a daily basis in a clean  and organized manner.   Posts client resource information, removes outdated materials from the bulletin board and keeps the lobby stocked with pamphlets,  flyers or other relevant handouts for clients and visitors. 


 


10. Participates in ongoing training. 


 


C.  Performs other duties as assigned by managing attorney or supervisors.  


II.        EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 


  • High School Diploma or GED or Certificate of Completion. 



  • Prior work experience as a receptionist or Intake Screener in a professional office preferred. Heavy phone volume/ customer interaction.  


  • Prefer experience working with low income persons. An understanding of the client community being served. 


  • Prior customer service experience  


  • Fluency in the Spanish language: speaking, reading and writing. 


  • Strong communication and phone skills. Displays the ability to communicate effectively with others, listen closely and convey points clearly. Strong active listening skills. 




  • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills and the ability to calm applicants who may be distraught

  • Perform ad hoc analyses of complex client accounts in regards to collections, rates, and reduced and rejected invoices.

  • Act as a liaison between billing attorneys and billing secretaries, attorneys, and/or organization (customers) and the billing staff.
