  ZooCamp is a summer day camp program run by the Education Department at Oakland Zoo. Each session is one week long and programs repeat multiple times each summer. The ideal candidate for this position has a love for young children and animals, and is a self-starter.  

 DATES: Mandatory planning/training May 31-June 4th, camp runs June 7th through July 30, 2021.   

HOURS: Morning Camp Assistant hours are 8:15 am – 1:15 pm, Monday – Friday Afternoon Camp Assistant hours are 12:15pm – 5:15 pm   

 SALARY: $17.50-$19.00/hour, depending on experience, no benefits 

  ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:   


  1. Lead animal close-ups for various age groups. You will be trained to handle      small animals and give information about them, and facilitate children      touching the animals. 

  2. Lead ZooCamp games (ex/ freeze dance, earth ball play, parachute play)

  3. Adapt games and animal close ups for age groups and themed curriculum

  4. Assist with preparing ZooCamp materials

  5. Assist with camper arrivals and departures

  6. Be a supportive team member by sharing ideas and assisting others

  7. Other duties as directed

  8. Follow protocols put in place for COVID safety of campers, staff, and zoo guests

QUALIFICATIONS:   


  1. Background in biology/zoology/environmental studies/related field or education (High school diploma required.)

  2. Experience working with children in an educational setting preferred

Formal training in biology, zoology, ecology, or environmental science is especially desirable. For summer 2021, we have 2 open positions working with our campers in grades Pre-K-5th.

HOURS: 8:15 am to 4:45 pm, Monday – Friday. This is a day camp program without overnight activities.

  ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:   


  1. Teach a small group of campers grades Pre-K-5th under the supervision of the ZooCamp Director. In this capacity, be the primary care-giver and supervisor for a group of 10-12 children each week.

  2. Utilize the zoo and the beautiful surrounding park and creek to introduce campers to animals and nature through science projects, art, games, exploration, and observation. 

  3. Implement programs that are imaginative, fun, hands-on, and centered on animals and ecology (based on the given themes). 

  4. Leave campers with a greater sense of ecological wonder, connection, respect and stewardship.  

  5. Mentor Teen Assistant volunteers in the skills required to work successfully with young children  

  6. Be a supportive team member by sharing ideas, assisting others, and participating in weekly staff meetings.

  7. Follow Department Operating Principals and ZooCamp Protocols

  8. Follow protocols put in place for COVID safety of campers, staff, and zoo guests

QUALIFICATIONS:

Serve as a mentor assisting individual students identified as working  below grade level by providing additional instruction in basic academic  skills such as reading, writing, spelling, math or other subject areas;  work individually with students or in small groups. E 

Assist students with class assignments, homework, test preparation, papers and projects.  

Assist the teacher with various class activities including  duplicating materials for lessons or  homework assignments, correcting  papers, filing and other activities as requested. E 

Assist the teacher with helping students to understand and adapt to  educational and social settings  and to develop organized study habits. E 

Assist in monitoring class, recess and other playground activities as assigned.  

Supervise students during yard duty as assigned. E

Position Overview

The Rookie/Vet Program Leader position is a part-time position within the Community Programs Department and on the Eureka team. The Rookie/Vet Program Leader will facilitate engaging STEAM and leadership development programming through hands on activities, field trips, and career exposure to girls in 8th & 9th grade who are enrolled in our 5-year Eureka! Program for the school year. Rookie/Vet program leader facilitates classes 3-4 days a week at the Girls Inc. downtown location or at the Girls Inc. satellite location in East Oakland in-person or virtually. The candidate for the Rookie/Vet program leader position will be able to make a commitment to work for the 2020-2021 academic school year.

The Rookie/Vet Program Leader may occasionally be on call for subbing for other sites/programs within the Community Programs Department. In addition to those duties, all Program Leaders will support girls' academic progress. The Rookie/Vet program leader will work with peers, supervisor and program manager to coach girls to develop their organization, time management, and study skills while provide homework assistance in math, science, history/social science, English and writing.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create and review weekly lesson plans with the Eureka Teen Achievement Program Coordinator prior to delivery.

  • Develop creative and engaging projects to enhance students’ learning.

  • Implement lessons aligned with the Common Core State Standards, Youth Development and trauma-informed practices.

DESCRIPTION

Chibi Chan Preschool, a child development program of JCYC, offers a  nurturing and stimulating environment for children age 2 to 5 years old.  We understand the process of developmental stages and we introduce new  concepts according to each child’s ability and age. Our curriculum is  Project Approach, which is an in-depth investigation on a topic that is  both concrete and close to children’s personal experiences, so that it  is rich in possibilities for varied learning activities and for  sustaining long-term interest in children.

 

JCYC  is a non-profit §501c(3) agency which annually serves 5,000  children and youth from all ethnic backgrounds through numerous programs  including preschool, employment training and placement, substance abuse  prevention and educational advising. The Lead Teacher is responsible for the nurturing care and supervision  of children ages 2 – 5 years old. The Lead Teacher reports to the  Director and/or Associate Director. Major responsibilities include: 1)  planning and executing the educational program in accordance with the  purpose and goals of Chibi Chan Preschool 2) general overall supervision  and classroom management needed in the classroom (environment,  activities, outside play, circle time, nap time, outside field trips  etc.) and 3) the overall supervision of their classroom staff. The Lead  Teacher’s responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to, the  following:

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Early Childhood Development

• Facilitate and supervise all daily activities to ensure a nurturing, friendly, and supportive learning environment;

• Ensure and monitor daily curriculum planning and preparation that is  age appropriate, culturally sensitive, hands-on, and fun by  incorporating a variety of interests including art, music, literature,  and science;

• Review, assist, monitor on-going assessments including updating  children portfolios, conducting the Desired Results Assessment or the  Developmental Assessment and writing Child Update Form on children (2  per month/each child);

• Plan and modify program to meet the needs of children, addressing  areas of special needs, different learning styles, social, emotional and  physical needs as well as talents and interests;

• Implement Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) on all Preschool For All (PFA) children;

• Interact and observe children through play, treat children with  dignity and respect, encourage involvement with other children;

• Ensure program plans are in accordance with the policies and  philosophy of NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct, Chibi Chan Preschool and  JCYC;

• Maintain communication with parents concerning child’s development  including conducting two parent/teacher conferences and/or additional  conferences if needed or requested by parent;

• Work with parents to promote understanding of their child’s growth and  development; encourage parent participation in school programs.

 

Administrative

• Manage and supervise on-sight staff including planning and conduction  weekly staff meetings, disseminating program instructions and  information from the Director or Associate Director, assigning daily  duties and assisting in training teachers, teacher aids and volunteers;

• Assist the Director/Associate Director in the evaluation of your classroom staff;

• Collaborate and participate in all school fundraisers and JCYC agency events;

• Participate in advocacy initiatives prioritized by JCYC;

• Other duties as needed.

 

JOB QUALIFICATION

EDUCATION:  BA Degree in Early Childhood or related field.

 

EXPERIENCE:  Minimum 2 years experience providing care in Early  Childhood Development.  Background and/or knowledge of the conduction  Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) preferred.  Ability to work  with diverse communities.  Professional, strong communication,  organization and follow-through skills.  Able to work in a team  environment.

  • Maintain frequent communications with parents through informal discussions, progress reports, and parent-teacher conferences.

In the East Bay we are partnering with organizations and schools such as La Clinica, UCSF Children’s Hospital Oakland, Oakland Public Education Fund, King Elementary School, Alameda County Office of Education, Berkeley High School Health Center, Oakland International High School, Fred Finch Youth Center and PACT, Inc. 

We are also partnering with organizations and schools in San Francisco such as The New School of San Francisco, Bridge the Gap College Prep, 18 Reasons, First Graduate, Youth Art Exchange, 826 Valencia, Huckleberry Youth Programs, City of Dreams and Mission Graduates. 

Position duties may include:


  • Support students/youth in developing the skills they need to be successful in school and life

  • Provide homework and academic support for program participants at school sites

  • Provide case management, referrals, and independent living skills for clients at community based sites

  • Plan and facilitate youth focused lesson plans and activities

  • Promote a safe and positive learning environment

  • Actively supervise and ensure student/youth safety at all times

  • Model positive attitudes, behaviors, and language

  • Communicate regularly with the site coordinator and regional supervisor
