Position: Cook/Nutritionist

Classification: Non-exempt

Work Schedule: Full-time Monday thru Friday 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM (40 hours per week, may require evening, weekends and holiday hours)

Agency: La Casa de las Madres (La Casa) is a nonprofit provider of service for battered women and their children. Founded in 1976, La Casa is San Francisco’s oldest domestic violence program, providing comprehensive supportive services through an Emergency Shelter, 2-24 hour hotlines, non-residential Community Programs, and Community Education and Outreach Programs serving over 19,000 women, teens and children survivors of domestic violence each year.

Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Shelter Program Manager, or her/his designee, the Cook/Nutritionist is responsible for providing nutritionally balanced food service for shelter residents. In addition to providing healthy meals, the Cook/ Nutritionist empowers women through training in basic living skills such as household budgeting, nutrition, meal planning and preparation. The Cook/Nutritionist will:

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:


  • Purchase and maintain adequate supply of food, staples and household necessities within budgetary guidelines;

  • oversee relationships with food vendors, including ordering, delivery & purchasing goods;

  • prepare weekly menu with residents and ensure nutritionally balanced meals;

  • prepare meals and snacks daily for up to 40 women and children;

  • assist clients with meal planning, preparation, cooking and clean-up;

  • train clients in basic living skills including household budgeting, nutrition, etc.;

  • coordinate utilization of community and state food resources (i.e. Food Bank);

  • maintain necessary service records to meet CACFP (Child Adult Care Food Program) requirements, such as inventory, purchase receipts, & menus;

  • coordinate and track food donations;

  • maintain pantry and food storage areas in a sanitary and orderly manner, in accordance with all health guidelines/requirements;

  • prepare food to meet various dietary, cultural and/or special occasion needs; and

  • special projects and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Minimum High School graduate or equivalent plus two (2) years’ experience in the food service field with basic understanding of nutrition.

  • Demonstrated ability to work well with staff & clients, preferably in a communal and/or residential setting.

  • Strong experience working in multicultural, multilingual setting.

  • Working knowledge of community resources in San Francisco Bay Area.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work as a team member with a strong commitment to collaborative work.

  • Ability to fulfill physical requirements of job (lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, moving up to 25+ lbs, walking up and down stairs multiple times per day, etc.) as needed to successfully perform job responsibilities.

  • May require completion of state mandated 40 hour domestic violence training or willingness to complete next scheduled agency 40 hour domestic violence training.

  • Valid CADL, good driving record, and insurable under agency’s policy.

  • Clearance through DOJ Live scan fingerprinting may be required; La Casa de las Madres will consider applicants, including those with criminal histories, in a manner consistent with San Francisco’s Fair Chance Ordinance.

  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Salary and Other Information: $18.00 to $24.00 per hour- DOE. Candidate will require relevant and verifiable work experience to qualify for maximum rate. The Cook/Nutritionist position is a primary employment position, full-time (40 hours per week), and may require flexibility in working evening, weekend and/or holiday hours. At First Mile Care we’re building the nation’s first affordable, scalable, and sustainable platform to improve the lives of people who have prediabetes. Our goal is to half the number of people in the U.S. with prediabetes by 2028. How? By scaling the CDC’s proven Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). We are committed to creating a nationwide network of First Mile Coaches in the vast majority of the U.S.’s 42,000 ZIP codes: local heroes trained to help their fellow community members make the right decisions on a daily basis so they can gain control of their health and reverse prediabetes.

Position Description:

Diabetes Prevention Program lifestyle coaches lead groups of participants through a year-long program to reduce the risk of diabetes in individuals with prediabetes or at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Using a CDC approved, evidence-based curriculum, coaches provide support and guidance to participants and help them develop and maintain the skills needed to adopt healthy eating and physical activity habits.

Duties and Responsibilities will include:


  • Facilitate in-person, weekly or bi-weekly sessions with a group of 8-15 participants through the year-long Diabetes Prevention Program.

  • Provide curriculum to class participants.

  • Maintain accurate attendance logs.

  • Provide feedback to First Mile Team after each session regarding positives and negatives of sessions.

  • Assist in recruiting participants and physician partners. Develop and maintain these relationships.

  • Identify and recommend community based locations for First Mile Care programs

Required Qualifications:


  • Have successfully completed Diabetes Prevention Program Training or successful completion of the Diabetes Prevention Program Training upon hire required.

  • Commit to a year-long coaching position.

  • Strong planning and organizational skills to balance and prioritize workload.

  • Familiarity and proficiency with motivational interviewing and group facilitation.

  • Be committed to and supportive of the First Mile mission, with a passion for helping people in your community.

  • Have a strong communication and relationship building skills, the ability to build community within a group, and have empathy for health seekers.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • 2+ years of experience in direct education and/or coaching with individuals and groups for disease prevention, health promotion and/or behavior change.

  • Knowledge of basic health, nutrition and fitness.

No experience necessary. Will train the right person.

Experience in the food service industry is preferred.

The SF Marin Food Bank is comprised of a dedicated team of approximately 150 staff working collaboratively to provide close to 50 million pounds of food to over 210,000 people in the Bay Area – a region where 1 in 4 people are at risk of hunger. We are currently looking for a Temporary Program Manager to help in our management of our Nutrition Education program. POSITION PURPOSE

This position will play an integral role in supporting and maintaining nutrition education programming at the Food Bank. The Temporary Full Time Program Manager is responsible for leading a team that is focused on program efficiency, as well as identifying and implementing required improvements to broaden the impact of our services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

Position includes most, if not all, of the following responsibilities:

Program Management


  • Oversee nutrition education programming in San Francisco and Marin

  • Organize, develop and deliver concise, effective and motivational presentations/trainings

  • Ensure effective program design, communication, and implementation

  • Lead curriculum development, review and refinement, as needed

  • Lead program design, testing and evaluation

  • Work with Strategy and Analytics team to ensure accurate data collection, reporting, projections and analysis

  • Oversee outreach efforts in conjunction with Neighborhood Representatives to promote nutrition education programming and identify sites for program implementation

  • Lead class/event scheduling

  • Continually monitor the effectiveness of program operations and business processes and make improvements as required

  • Convene regular stakeholder groups to discuss program performance and impact

  • Participate in discussions with strategic partners (e.g. SF Dept. of Public Health; SFUSD) around nutrition-related programming

Policy, Systems, and Environmental Changes


  • Manage and facilitate nutrition education training program for volunteers, interns, and partner agencies. Provide on-going support to training participants and ensure that training participants fulfill program requirements

  • Maintain the organization wide Food Sourcing Policy, which explains why food sourcing decisions are made; train staff on policy as part of onboarding process

  • Oversee the creation of Yum Videos, blog posts and other media content to effectively share out nutrition education messages with internal and external audiences

Direct Education


  • Manage and facilitate nutrition education workshops focused on topics such as: basic nutrition, decreasing sugar and salt consumption, increasing fruit/vegetable/whole grain consumption, how to read a food label and ingredient list, and shopping on a budget

Indirect Education


  • Manage and facilitate food demonstrations to educate low-income communities on nutrition, healthy recipes and cooking techniques

Food as Medicine


  • Provide Food Pharmacy sites with nutrition education tools and resources

Food Safety


  • Support Food Safety efforts by recommending steps to maintain compliance with external Food Safety requirements, acting as the Food Safety lead for the Programs Team, and supporting the staff who track and ensure site compliance

Other duties as assigned


  • Coordinate special requests from other departments

  • Represent the Food Bank to varied audiences and collaborate with appropriate private and public organizations to further our mission

Contract/Grant/Budget Management


  • Participate in government contract/private grant reporting, negotiations, relationship management and development, as needed

Completion of clinical training that meets the guidelines set by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics required. Prior work experience or an internship in the fitness industry preferred. Minimum of 2 of years of clinical experience preferred. CPR/AED certification required within 90 days of hire (provided by Power Wellness) Current Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) certification from the Commission of Dietetic Registry (CDR) required. Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN) may be required per state and/or federal requirements. Certification in weight management preferred. Must possess excellent inter-personal and communication skills, and the ability to work with members in a positive, service based manner. Ability to multi-task and maintain a controlled and professional demeanor.   • Must have experience in LTC and/or sub Acute setting, and proficiency in MDS 3.0, possible tube feeding, vent unit experience.


  • Experience with Dialysis, Wound Care, Cardiac and weights.


  • Must have 2-4 years experience in long term care, sub acute, rehabilitation or healthcare.


  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and Meal-Tracker a plus.


  • Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, and client service skills are required.


  • Must be true team player.


  • Physical demands: sitting/standing for long periods of time, walking, climbing stairs, reaching, bending, and kneeling. Must be able to lift and carry 25 pounds.


  • Visual demands: viewing computer screen and charts for long periods of time

  • Bachelors degree


  • Proof of passing the national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).


  • Ability to stand, walk and move around a facility with ease.
