In service of that mission, in 2020, and beyond, MoveOn will drive impactful, movement-connected, multichannel, nimble campaigns aimed at impact. We are hiring a passionate problem solver who will work broadly across many projects with campaign staff to run innovative campaigns using top-of-the-line political technology, digital campaigning tools and data analysis. This role will involve helping staff use tools, administering tools, customizing tools, and analyzing data generated by these tools. Do you love working at the intersection of progressive organizing and technology? Join our team! This role is open to candidates at all levels.

About MoveOn Systems

MoveOn’s millions of members generate significant website and digital tool traffic that create interesting scaling problems to solve. We have terabytes of data that drive ambitious analytics, fundraising, and engagement programs. At MoveOn, making decisions with data is a core part of how all work gets done. Like many nonprofit tech teams, we're a small, scrappy team, wear many hats, and work across the software stack.

While we often split up who is working on which projects, everyone on the team works on all parts of our systems. We have ~10 production systems—and two systems running at significant scale—getting thousands of requests per minute during spikes of member energy. We believe in choosing the best language, platform, and tool for the job and are not language zealots, but we also recognize the switching cost of straddling too many languages.

We do a lot of work in Python and Javascript and deploy most systems to AWS () but believe good programmers don’t need to come in with an exact match of experience and can learn our systems and software stacks. We are deeply collaborative and spend lots of time pair-programming over Zoom video. We have a “no stupid questions” policy and encourage egoless collaboration. We build and maintain infrastructure that powers the organization and amplifies the work of the analytics and mobile teams. We’ve created software management processes based on Agile that let us work in a flexible, all-remote environment and empower us to embed with organizers and work on tight political deadlines.

Responsibilities:

  • Work across many projects with campaign staff to run innovative campaigns using top-of-the-line political technology, digital campaigning tools and data analysis

  • Quickly get up to speed and develop mastery in the online campaigning platform ActionKit; candidate will have a supported onboarding process and learning plan that includes ActionKit

  • Work side by side with MoveOn team members on complex digital organizing tasks like creating targeted emails, surveys, donation forms, and live event recruitment pages

  • Effectively triage and manage a list of technical support tasks to ensure that MoveOn staff's technical needs are met

  • Help MoveOn team members edit HTML on campaign webpages

  • Write SQL and use data analysis tools to support team members with campaign reporting

  • Train MoveOn team members on complex workflows that use online campaigning tools

  • Contribute your ideas to organizational strategy discussions

  • Contribute your ideas to tech team discussions to enhance and improve our tools and tactics

Required skills and experience:

  • Excellent project management skills; ability to organize, manage, and communicate clearly about a list of 30+ tasks at a time

  • Excellent process management skills: ability to understand complex organizational systems and optimize processes that intersect with tech.

  • At least 2 years of professional experience in a tech or tech-adjacent role.

  • Determined, thorough, and a relentless finisher -- able to reliably drive tasks and projects through to completion

  • Knowledge of SQL in a relational database like MySQL or PostgreSQL, or a desire to quickly learn

  • Experience editing HTML and CSS, or a desire to quickly learn

  • Comfortable with or willing to learn to use a linux command line interface

  • A strong interest in learning and developing expertise in new technical tools, frameworks, and software

  • Able to fluently communicate with both technical and nontechnical staff

  • Curious, and a fearless learner and problem solver

  • Ability to be effective in an organization whose team members all work remotely

  • Ability to effectively and rapidly respond to urgent support requests

Location: Position may be based anywhere in the continental United States.

Classification, Salary, and Benefits:

Full-time, competitive salary including benefits such as 100%-employer-paid premiums for medical, dental, and vision insurance for all staff and their children; 401k plan with employer contribution, employer-paid premiums for life insurance; four weeks accrued paid vacation time per year, prorated for the period that you work; 18 weeks of paid parental leave (birth, adoption, foster care placement of a child), 10 days accrued paid sick time, and paid family medical leave; staff holidays, professional development budget of $1,000, monthly cell phone and internet reimbursement of $175 per month, home office subsidy, and everything needed for a home office.

What we want to accomplish and why were hiring you
Suki is creating a new category in the health tech space - the digital assistant. We are going to be the voice user interface for healthcare. What does that mean exactly? Currently doctors use their electronic medical record system to track patient encounters (a digital version of the old paper charts you use to see in the doctors office and on TV). These systems can be hard to navigate and creating medical notes in these systems can be very time consuming. Time that a doctor would rather have to spend with patients. This is the problem were solving right now! Doctors that use Suki spend 50%+ less time on administrative tasks and were striving to do even more.

We are a product driven company. Suki has one product running as a single service and were focused on making that world class. Were a cloud native company using the latest and greatest technologies built on top of Google Cloud. Our platform team consists of DevOps, security, platform and back-end engineers that are committed to reliably and securely scaling our cloud platform to enable the rest of our engineering team. We own the voice stack that powers the digital assistant. Our tech stack includes: Terraform, Kubernetes, GoLang and various GCP services and were going to scale it to support millions of hours of real-time streaming voice.

What will you do everyday?
Youll ensure site reliability. Youll deploy and maintain infrastructure to scale our product. Youll live and breathe SLAs, SLOs and SLIs and enable other developers to leverage our platform correctly and efficiently. Youll work on our CI/CD process and youll help conduct and participate in blameless post-mortems. And youll be a rock star.

Ok, you're sold, but what are we looking for in the perfect candidate?

  • Collaboration: you like working with teams and will do whatever it takes to help others succeed.

  • Commitment: you care about uptime and an outage burns away a bit of your soul

  • Coolness under fire: youre calm when systems fail and simply get to work to get all systems back up.

  • Humility: youre humble and love working in a team without ego to deliver products

  • Adaptability: you thrive in a fast-moving organization that uses light-weight process and cutting-edge technology to have a huge impact.

  • Empathy: you want to empower others and feel bad when they feel bad

  • Experience with Go, Bash, Python

  • Experience with monitoring & alerting tools

  • CI/CD, automation of testing infrastructure a plus

  • Experience with HIPAA a plus

  • You believe class SRE implements DevOps

* We dont necessarily expect to find a candidate that has done everything weve listed, but you should be able to make a credible case that youve done most of it and are ready for the challenge of adding some new things to your resume.

Please note: this position is in Redwood City, CA and at this time we cannot support relocation or visa transitions. Accordingly, applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Job Description

What you’ll be doing:

    • Provisioning and maintaining cloud infrastructure that will support training machine learning models over billions of historical data points collected from tens of thousands of retail stores across the US.

    • Monitoring and measuring system performance and iteratively push for improvements in this area by introducing new technologies or developing new tools.

    • Ensuring that our system meets the highest security standards. Collaborating with a team of security specialists to enforce secure practices across the company.

    • Maintaining a high standard of engineering excellence by implementing best practices for software development, testing, and deployment.

    • Providing input into long-range platform requirements.

What skills and experience you’ll need:

    • Bachelors or Masters in Computer Science or equivalent.

    • 2+ years of work experience.

    • Strong programming and problem-solving skills.

    • Deep expertise in infrastructure design, provisioning, and management using modern virtualization and orchestration platforms with a particular emphasis on Kubernetes.

    • Extensive experience with Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and other cloud providers.

    • Intimate familiarity with the DevOps toolkit (Terraform, Ansible, Chef, and other tools).

    • Demonstrated understanding of security best practices.

Background

About 30-40% of food produced worldwide is thrown away, causing nearly a trillion dollars of economic losses, trillions of gallons of wasted water, and billions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions. In the US, about 40% of all food waste occurs at the retail level and downstream, largely driven by insufficient technology and manual processes.

Afresh seeks to tackle some of these big problems around food waste. Born out of Stanford's Computer Science PhD program, Afresh is the first Fresh food supply chain company. We bring the cutting edge of artificial intelligence to Fresh food to minimize food waste.

Our machine learning-powered supply chain solutions are tailored for the nuances of perishables. Our first product is a store-level replenishment tool that optimizes the ordering of items in Fresh categories -- produce, meat, deli, dairy, bakery, and prepared foods. The goal is to minimize waste and maximize in-stock rate, and consequently, profit.

So far, the results are awesome! Like we said above, in live deployments, we have demonstrated the potential to double profits and reduce food waste by 50%+.

We're growing fast: we're in partnership with 4 large regional grocers representing 500+ stores and >$10B in revenue. Our backers include Innovation Endeavors (former Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s firm) and Baseline Ventures (first money in Stitchfix, SoFi, Heroku, Instagram).

Company Description

We are a technology-driven resource specializing in highly-skilled technical talent solutions for U.S. and international markets. We create strategic partnerships with dynamic companies, leveraging an innovative AI platform to deliver fast, efficient talent matching. Our teams deliver results as we delight today's fast-moving organizations and highly skilled talent with advanced strategies on an international scale.
