SCA Environmental, Inc. is a small environmental consulting firm with two local Bay Area offices. SCA works for many different types of clients, including cities, agencies, high-rise office building owners, banks, the US military, housing developers, non-profit groups, and manufacturing companies.

We currently have the following positions available in our San Francisco office:

Entry Level Environmental Specialist - San Francisco office (Job Code: ESP2-SF)

 

The selected candidate will work with our staff of environmental scientists, civil and mechanical engineers, safety professionals and industrial hygienists. The successful candidate will spend approximately 75% of their time performing environmental engineering and/or industrial hygiene based assessments and monitoring involving asbestos and lead. Other types of projects that you will perform include indoor air quality investigations; sampling of air, soil and water; construction monitoring; evaluation of buildings for hazardous materials; and historical site assessments.

The position will include approximately 75% field work and 25% office work over the course of the year. Note that SCA will train you in the necessary technical areas, so you do not need to have experience in all areas. The most important things you can bring to the job are a desire to learn, an ability to be flexible, and a willingness to work hard.

Qualifications & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree preferred (job requires high school level Sciences, all majors welcomed as well as OPT)

• Excellent communication (oral and written) skills

• Excellent organizational skills

• Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel).

• Must be able to work independently and as part of a team

• Ability to multi-task and work on multiple projects at the same time

• Must be physically able to climb a 20′ ladder, lift up to 50 pounds, enter crawl spaces and attics, and work on construction sites near heavy construction equipment and in outside weather conditions such as wet and/or humid conditions. Work may be conducted in locations where noise, fumes, dust, toxic materials are present.

• Participation in SCA’s Medical Surveillance Program, which requires the selected candidate to maintain a current medical clearance to work and wear respiratory protection

• A reliable car, drivers license, and auto insurance for field work are REQUIRED

• Ability to work nights and weekends, which occurs up to 25% of the time, is also required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

Strategy & Analytics for Programs Dept.


  • Administer planning process for developing, managing and reporting on SMARTIE goals, providing necessary data to relevant stakeholders in an easily digestible format

  • Administer process to develop, measure, manage and report on key performance indicators

  • Track and report on progress toward program strategic priorities

  • Manage data analysis and reporting

  • Develop departmental and team dashboards, reports, maps, etc., coordinating data collection and performing utilization training

  • Perform quantitative opportunity and risk assessments

  • Oversee inter- and intra-departmental data sharing and utilization for the department

  • Administer evaluation of programs, projects and pilots

  • Administer research projects, as needed and assigned

  • Administer processes to analyze the effectiveness of current programs, projects and business processes and make detailed recommendations for improvement, in line with budget, where required

  • Convene regular stakeholder groups to discuss program performance and impact

  • Collaborate with Business Intelligence staff on evaluating, developing recommendations and overseeing the optimization of all department data collection, analysis, reporting, utilization, maintenance and/or purging

Budgeting and Grant/Contract Management


  • Administer budgeting process including creation of tools, training of managers, projections and reporting

  • Collaborate with Finance and Administration and Development departments to develop government contracts and private grant proposals and manage reporting, initiatives and outcomes as assigned

Program & Project Development and Management


  • Develop, promote and manage programs and projects as assigned

  • Act as ambassador in programs department, advancing Strategy & Analytics initiatives

QUALIFICATIONS


  • BA or equivalent relevant experience

  • Minimum 2 years demonstrated success in managing comparable department wide initiatives

  • Experience extracting, gleaning, analyzing and reporting on data from major organizational databases, preferably enterprise and customer relationship-management focused, and ideally with success managing the implementation or upgrade of a similar systems

  • Experience managing staff, preferred

  • Extensive knowledge of Food Bank Programs

  • Extensive knowledge of Food Bank Program Management, reporting and regulations

  • Extensive knowledge of Programs department software systems

  • Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Powerpoint, Word etc.) including advanced Excel skills

Role

 

We are currently hiring Data Scientists and Data Engineers to become part of the

first ten employees of our company and core members of our early-stage team. Working

directly with the founders, the data scientists/engineers will be interfacing cross-

functionally with our technology development team, relevant academic advisers, our in-

house operations team as well as external contractors and select clients. Key focus of

our early-stage work will be on expanding the current algorithms to become a full-fledged

model architecture, core to the functioning of our business, including but not limited to

demand prediction, data-driven route optimization, pricing and revenue management

Responsibility

Building demand prediction models for future shipping orders (in terms of both

the volume and the price)

Integrating the demand prediction model with our current route optimization

Building real-time and stochastic models for the events of traffic delay,

Working closely with our scientific advisors in developing state-of-the-art models

for routing planning, revenue management, and robust sequential decision

Job Qualifications

  • Past experience with advanced telematics/sensor data, geospatial and other non-traditional datasets is a huge plus. 

  • Aptitude and strong interest in statistical modeling techniques such as linear regression, logistic regression, GLM, GAM, GBM, etc. –

NLP and Deep Learning


Are you passionate about the possibility of applying your Deep Learning and NLP skills to extract meaning from Allstate's massive unstructured data? As a Sr. Data Scientist authority in these areas you will be responsible for researching, developing, and improving algorithms that help computers learn from text. Our goal is to reduce the time and expense of performing traditionally manual tasks, growing efficiency and reducing costs. By extracting meaning from large data sets containing millions of documents, you will help Allstate to develop NLP capabilities to improve the speed and ease with which we underwrite a policy, estimate a claim, or service a customer.


 


IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:



  • Conduct state of the art research in Natural Language Processing / Understanding.

  • Use research and apply state-of-the-art deep learning techniques to inform key strategic recommendations and decisions.

  • Work across the enterprise to identify and incubate business use cases.

  • Advise data scientists and business partners on applying NLP in their work and regularly train them on the state-of-the-art.



Job Qualifications




  • Expertise developing natural language processing/understanding algorithms/models required.

  • Expertise applying deep learning techniques to NLP/U problems required including thorough knowledge of the theory and practice of NLP and deep-learning techniques.

  • Strong experience in other machine learning, or artificial intelligence algorithms/models required.  

  • Strong coder, with experience building models and analyzing data using general machine learning tools (e.g. in R, Python, Matlab) and deep learning tools (e.g. TensorFlow, Keras) required.  Software development experience a plus.

  • Strong experience implementing models in production.

  • Ability to craft new concepts and stay current with academic research.  Published research a plus.

  • Strong experience working with non-technical stakeholders.  Ability to summarize research and analysis for audiences with varying levels of expertise.

  • A graduate degree in a field such as math, computer science, statistics, engineering or machine learning, or equivalent experience.
