We are seeking a Senior Scientist to join our Metabolic Engineering team, to improve the production of high-value compounds in yeast.

Job Responsibilities


  • Optimize cellular metabolism and engineer biosynthetic pathways in micro-organisms, notably yeast(s)

  • Analyze production organism physiology and genetics to identify bottlenecks and design constructs/genes for improved performance

  • Develop biological assays to determine rate-limiting steps and compare strains/enzymes

  • Collaborate with the analytics and fermentation teams for proper method development and analysis

  • Guide enzyme improvement campaigns with third party labs

  • Mentor and advise junior teammates on metabolic engineering strategies and techniques

Requirements

Job Qualifications


  • PhD in Biological Engineering, Systems Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field, ideally with industry experience. M.S. level considered with additional relevant experience (>5 years of hands-on strain engineering work)

  • Expertise in metabolic and genetic engineering with experience building, testing, and optimizing metabolic pathways for the production of heterologous products, preferably in yeasts

  • Demonstrated expertise in performing rate-based data analysis

  • Good understanding of OMICs data generation and ability to extract knowledge from meta-data studies

  • Command of genome editing tools

  • Experience utilizing common analytical techniques such as HPLC and spectroscopy

  • Protein characterization experience is highly desirable

  • Ability to plan and execute experimental plans independently, while aligning priorities with project team to support business goals

  • Good time management skills and ability to multi-task

  • Proactive in troubleshooting

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic interdisciplinary team environment

Job Qualifications

  • Past experience with advanced telematics/sensor data, geospatial and other non-traditional datasets is a huge plus. 

  • Aptitude and strong interest in statistical modeling techniques such as linear regression, logistic regression, GLM, GAM, GBM, etc. –

  • Standard knowledge in the use of data sources and applications to conduct research Strong technical aptitude, such as programming experience with Python, R, SAS, or SQL required.

  • Working knowledge of insurance regulation and related business constraints Has an understanding of current industry and professional standards/ environment to impact decisions and indicate requirements

The Principal Data Scientist of Technical Institute (TI) is a member of the US Medical Affairs Evidence for Access (E4A) Medical Unit. He/she serves as the TI point of contact for E4A health economics outcomes research (HEOR) and health policy and systems research (HPSR) members to design and execute observational research using in-house real-world data (RWD). As a subject matter expert, he/she may also review and design retrospective observational studies that are conducted by external vendors.

Candidates with additional experience in technical health economics (e.g. building cost-effectiveness models) or app/dashboard/website development are encouraged to apply.

Key responsibilities include:


  • Collaborate with E4A HEOR and HPSR project owners to identify the appropriate in-house databases (e.g., claims/survey/electronic medical record) and design appropriate methodology to answer specific research questions and to address business need

  • Participate in E4A strategic planning and lead the execution of in-house RWD studies of E4A HEOR and HSPR project owner

  • Develop and/or oversee research protocol and statistical analysis plan. Recommend and implement appropriate analytical methodology (e.g., propensity score matching, regression analysis...etc) for RWD studies

  • Mentor junior TI members to conduct the analyses, to review the results, and to communicate/publish findings. Lead and oversee the analytic execution to ensure the analyses are conducted with the highest accuracy and quality

This is a very detail orientated role where you will be doing mostly paperwork and reviewing documents though it is very pivotal role to ensure getting the best results for our patients.  

Minimal Qualifications:


  • Masters/PhD plus at least 2 years’ post-graduate experience in areas that have granted a deep understanding of T cell biology and/or Immuno-Oncology as it relates to T cells

  • Detail orientated is a must

  • Experience in data review would be a plus

  • Experience in large data analysis and writing code is a plus

  • The candidate should be highly goal-driven and have demonstrated the ability to effectively prioritize and focus on time-sensitive objectives 

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision

The Strategic and Data Science Initiatives (SDSI) Program is part of the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research Biomedical Informatics and Data Science Directorate. The Accelerating Therapeutics for Opportunities in Medicine (ATOM) Consortium (atomscience.org) is a public-private partnership with the mission of transforming drug discovery by accelerating the development of more effective therapies for patients. ATOM founding members are GSK, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Frederick National Laboratory, and the University of California, San Francisco. ATOM consortium members are developing, testing, and validating a multidisciplinary approach to drug discovery in which modern science, technology and engineering, supercomputing simulations, data science, and artificial intelligence are highly integrated into a single drug-discovery platform that can ultimately be shared with the drug development community at large.

Frederick National Laboratory is hiring a Cancer Drug Discovery Data Science Fellow to work in computationally-driven cancer drug discovery as part of the ATOM Consortium. This position is based in San Francisco, California.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possession of a PhD in Computer Science, Math or Biomedical Science related field from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • A strong background in any of the following: cancer biology, pharmaceutical or medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, drug discovery, computational biology, in silico biology, bioinformatics, systems biology, molecular dynamics, multiscale modeling, machine learning, adaptive learning or high-performance computing
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance

Expected Competencies:

  • Analytical approach to defining scientific questions

  • Design of scientifically testable hypotheses

  • Interpretation and analysis of data
