Job Summary: The Chef is responsible for the Prepare and Cook product in the Prepared Foods Department. Operations including providing guest service and assuring that team members are following company policies and procedures. The Chef is responsible for:


· Enhancing the guest’s experience by being friendly, responsive, knowledgeable and passionate about service. Making decisions regarding product quality and proper utilization of “shrink” items using company approved recipes


· Possessing excellent guest service skills and act as the role model for other team members


· Achieving production and budget objectives


Essential Job Functions:


· Responsible for holding daily department meetings-covering daily specials, daily safety focus item review, weekly technique review, previous day’s department sales, push items, upcoming events/caterings, and daily CSI scores


· Responsible for communicating daily specials to the Store Director or the Assistant Store Director in their absence, and walking the department prior to lunch with them


· Responsible for pro-actively working with cross functional departments to determine usable shrink, supplemental items needed, and superior quality of all ingredients used in product preparation


· Downloads and provides weekly HACCP reports from Rational units using Rational standard operating procedures


· Responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of the department, including providing direction to direct reports on company approved sanitation guidelines and address any issues that need to be immediately resolved


· Accompanies and pro-actively works with Health Department Inspectors and third party audits to ensure superior department cleanliness scores. This position is required to accompany the inspector during their walk, for the entirety of their walk, and must be on hand to answer any questions as well as immediately address any concerns.



  • Maintain a neat and well- groomed personal appearance at all times and observe Company dress code policy

  • Prepare/Cook food, stock and rotate product in display case, Coolers and Freezers, unload deliveries. Operate and clean all equipment and tools

  • Cleans and organizes kitchen area as well as coolers and walk in freezers

  • Assist in receiving and unloading of merchandise and take stock to storage or shelf areas including Coolers and Freezers

  • Keep Manager or other designated personnel informed of low inventory conditions or spoilage problems

  • Handle all damaged or spoiled products according to Company policy and assist in controlling the level of damaged goods

  • Perform other duties as assignments as directed. Assist the Deli Department Manager share accountability for all aspects of the operation and supervision of the department including, but not limited to: Department personnel; providing guest service; achieving sales, gross profit, labor, shrink and inventory goals set for the Department; product ordering, quality, presentation, merchandising, organization, pricing, stocking, shelf allocation, staffing, training, turnover and morale

  • Assure that all Company and Department specific policies and procedures are adhered to on a regular basis

  • Perform job functions of other Department personnel in their absence and/or in addition to them

  • Operate various store computer systems

  • Achieve other objectives including, but not limited to food safety, workplace safety, and company audits

· Chef assists in scheduling of all planned duties as assigned.


  • Make recommendations on staffing the Department. Assign work to, direct the work of and train Department personnel

· Ability to provide regular and predictable attendance. Work a variety shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays, and schedules may vary on a weekly basis


· Must be able to work at a fast, efficient and controlled manner


· Ability to function as a team member and maintain professional business relationships with team members


· Maintain high standards of safety within department and store


· Ability to understand and follow instructions, and ability to read, retain and comprehend guidelines, policies and procedures applicable to the position


· Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment


· Ability to work independently as well as within a large team


· Self-motivated and driven to increase knowledge of Albertsons Safeway products and share that knowledge with our customers

Qualifications:



  • Culinary Foods Training, School or previous kitchen experience preferred

  • Successful completion of a training program or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Leadership qualities including, but not limited to: good listening skills; the ability to motivate others; respect for and tolerance of others; the ability to communicate pleasantly and effectively with guests, vendors, Store Management, other Store and Company personnel;

  • Thorough understanding of Company and Department specific policies and procedures

  • Good judgment, the ability to make sound decisions and to solve any problems arising in the course of performing the work of the Department

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Ability to understand guests needs and ask questions to expedite the handling of requests

  • Must be at least 18 years old

  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast paced environment

  • Experience in Chef-Prepared foods, Kitchen or equivalent

  • Ability to work inside, Cold and Hot environments

  • Must be able to work around Safety Risk Factors and conditions in a kitchen environment including:
    • Twisting, slippery floors surfaces, cluttered floor surfaces, Hot cooking surfaces and Hot equipment, fumes, sprays, hazardous cleaning solutions and operations of department equipment Machines, Tools, including Knives, Slicers, Food processors, Grill, Warmer, Fryer, Smoker, Ovens, Kitchen utensils, Electric Scales, Mixer, Pizza ovens, Shrink film wrapper, power or hand Jack, pressure washer, trash Compactor



Physical Environment:



  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs

  • Retail store conditions are generally dry with moderate temperature

  • Freezer conditions are generally very cold

  • Cooler conditions are generally cold

  • Requires the performance of repetitive task
