The Computer Technician position (part-time) is about working with users at their site, to support their IT needs, and those of their campus.  Install and update Windows, Apple Mac OS, as well as work on Chromebooks and iPads.  Troubleshoot interactive boards, software, and help the networking and other specialized teams with specific campus projects and issues.  We assume you're technically minded and well-versed in technology generally, but understand you may not ever had done MDM or worked with interactive boards, or other industry-specific products.  We'll teach you those parts.

MoveOn’s millions of members generate significant website and digital tool traffic that create interesting scaling problems to solve. We have terabytes of data that drive ambitious analytics, fundraising, and engagement programs. At MoveOn, making decisions with data is a core part of how all work gets done. Like many nonprofit tech teams, we're a small, scrappy team, wear many hats, and work across the software stack.

While we often split up who is working on which projects, everyone on the team works on all parts of our systems. We have ~10 production systems—and two systems running at significant scale—getting thousands of requests per minute during spikes of member energy.   • Work across many projects with campaign staff to run innovative campaigns using top-of-the-line political technology, digital campaigning tools and data analysis

  • Quickly get up to speed and develop mastery in the online campaigning platform ActionKit; candidate will have a supported onboarding process and learning plan that includes ActionKit

  • Work side by side with MoveOn team members on complex digital organizing tasks like creating targeted emails, surveys, donation forms, and live event recruitment pages

  • Effectively triage and manage a list of technical support tasks to ensure that MoveOn staff's technical needs are met

  • Help MoveOn team members edit HTML on campaign webpages

  • Write SQL and use data analysis tools to support team members with campaign reporting

  • Train MoveOn team members on complex workflows that use online campaigning tools

  • Contribute your ideas to organizational strategy discussions

  • Contribute your ideas to tech team discussions to enhance and improve our tools and tactics

Required skills and experience: 

  • Excellent project management skills; ability to organize, manage, and communicate clearly about a list of 30+ tasks at a time

  • Excellent process management skills: ability to understand complex organizational systems and optimize processes that intersect with tech.

  • At least 2 years of professional experience in a tech or tech-adjacent role.

  • Determined, thorough, and a relentless finisher -- able to reliably drive tasks and projects through to completion

  • Knowledge of SQL in a relational database like MySQL or PostgreSQL, or a desire to quickly learn

  • Experience editing HTML and CSS, or a desire to quickly learn

  • Comfortable with or willing to learn to use a linux command line interface

  • A strong interest in learning and developing expertise in new technical tools, frameworks, and software

  • Able to fluently communicate with both technical and nontechnical staff

  • Curious, and a fearless learner and problem solver

  • Ability to be effective in an organization whose team members all work remotely

Classification, Salary, and Benefits:

Job Description

We are looking for heavily experienced desktop support/field service and repair technicians with training and multiple years of experience in Chromebooks, laptops, desktops, and printers break/fix repair services, and desktop software support for Windows, Office, Office365, etc. at client sites per the job description below. Candidates MUST have multiple years experience in hardware failure troubleshooting, parts identification and removal/replacement and complete resolution of all types of hardware failures. Experience with providing these same services for Apple products is a PLUS including Mac's, Macbooks, and IOS devices. Certifications for repair services by Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Lexmark also a PLUS. Only qualified candidates need apply, multiple positions open for immediate start.


Title: Field Service Technician

Location: Chicago, IL

Type: Non-Exempt/Full Time

Compensation: Hourly (commensurate with certification and experience level.)

Position Description:

The Field Technician is responsible for providing desktop support services, both on-site and off-site. He/she aids by diagnosing and troubleshooting technical issues, ordering any necessary parts and performing parts replacements in the efforts to complete repairs and resolve issues. Support for Windows 7, 10, Office, Office365, etc. also required. The Field Technician must update service orders with detailed information regarding the status of the
repairs. He/she works closely with their teammates to resolve issues and adjust priorities throughout the day based on call volume and other metrics.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Answer phone calls and/or email related to technical support and requests

  • Demonstrate the ability to perform all tasks assigned with minimal direct supervision

  • Support teammates by sharing knowledge, providing feedback and assisting with follow- up tasks

  • Clearly document troubleshooting steps and details of the issue/request in call/incident tickets

  • Reference and follow knowledge base articles and other documentation for processes/procedures

  • Troubleshooting network connectivity issues in a LAN/WAN environment with wired and wireless


  • Configure Windows and Mac OS X workstations to network & local printers

  • Perform installs, moves, adds and changes (IMACs)

  • Responsible for the timely and cost-effective maintenance and repair of office printing/copier equipment (HP, Lexmark, Okidata, Zebra experience a plus)

  • Troubleshoot printing issues for local and network printers

  • Provide support for Microsoft Office Suite

  • Provide support for Microsoft Windows Operating Systems (OS)
