Title: AmeriCorps Volunteer Infrastructure Project (VIP) Fellow

# of positions: 3  Locations: San Rafael, Sacramento or Muir Beach, CA 

Term of service: February - August 2020 

Anticipated Service Schedule: Each AmeriCorps VIP Fellow will serve a total of 900 hours over the term of service, averaging 36 hours per week, which may include some evening and weekend hours. Typically, Fellows serve Monday – Friday. 

About AmeriCorps VIP: The AmeriCorps Volunteer Infrastructure Project (VIP) strengthens nonprofits to increase impact through the power of volunteers. We are seeking three AmeriCorps Fellows (one per nonprofit) to serve at the International Rescue Committee (Sacramento), Slide Ranch (Muir Beach), or Community Action Marin (San Rafael). 

Our AmeriCorps members are called VIP Fellows, and they are leaders who build sustainable volunteer programs at nonprofits. Nonprofits that have strong volunteer programs are able to serve more clients and tackle more of our communities’ challenges. VIP Fellows join a nonprofit team and help them build systems that recruit, train, support, manage, and measure the success of volunteers. Each VIP Fellow is placed at a participating nonprofit, and collaborates with that organization’s professional staff to build or strengthen volunteer management systems. 

VIP Fellows are members of a statewide network of 120 Fellows, and are key contributors of a local cohort of Bay Area and Sacramento Fellows that meet regularly for collaboration and training. Over the course of the service term, VIP Fellows earn a Certificate in Volunteer Management, and become experienced in community outreach, volunteer management, nonprofit operations, partnership building, and professional communication. 

The VIP Fellow team in the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento is managed by the Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership (CVNL). Come join the team, and make an impact this year! 

AmeriCorps VIP Fellow Duties:  

• Develop, implement or strengthen a nonprofit organization’s volunteer program in collaboration with organizational leadership 

• Identify and design impactful volunteer opportunities that meet the needs of the community’s children and families  

• Recruit and train community members as volunteers 

• Utilize the VIP Work Plan to build systems for tracking, training, managing, and evaluating volunteers 

• Serve side-by-side with staff and volunteers to provide guidance, to better understand the clients’ needs, and to improve the volunteer experience 

•  Develop business partnerships that provide voluntary and limited financial support for the participating nonprofit  

• Participate in professional development opportunities, including orientation, Volunteer Management Certificate program, regular meetings, National Day of Service projects with other VIP Fellows, a regional VIP Fellow retreat, and online training.

The boiler stations entail extended periods of work over open flames. The fryer station entails working with shortening heated to 350 or higher degrees Fahrenheit.

Program Overview

Art Beast Child Development Center is a play based center for children infant, toddler, preschool and school aged children. Both schools offer intentional curriculum and are play based. Tag-lined as “a school for creators, inventors, and havers of grand ideas,” Both schools offer environments where a child can engage in self-directed play and exploration. Indoor and outdoor spaces include opportunities for both community and independent play. The dynamic environments balance an offering of rhythm and predictability with ever rotating supplies and experiences that allow children to explore the arts, sciences, movement, nature, math, reading, writing, and community in a range of ways.

Our schools were founded by the same creative team behind Art Beast Children’s Studio in midtown Sacramento.

At this time, we are looking for full and/or part time staff. We are looking for fully qualified and experienced teachers. We have very specific hours to offer. This description details the responsibilities of the teacher.

Overview of Responsibilities and Duties

Preschool Teachers deliver a child development program that gives each child ample time to explore, create, and learn about his or her world. We are seeking fully qualified preschool teachers who will be responsible for inspiring and ensuring the safety of a class group of up to 41/72 children with low adult to child ratios. Preschool teachers will work closely with the center director to design and implement meaningful play environments and maintain healthy rhythms. Teachers are also responsible for directing classroom assistant teachers and interns. We are looking for experienced teachers with a true reverence for children and a passion for creating and leading process-based learning experiences. The teachers must also be able to maintain the fundamental philosophies and policies of both the school(s)and licensing requirements. Teachers communicate each child’s growth and challenges to his or her parent through quarterly documentation reports, portfolios of work, and daily communication.

Teachers are under the supervision and report to Center Director(s)/Site Supervisor(s)

Primary Responsibilities

Lead a Meaningful and Joyful Child Development Program

• Celebrate each child by learning his or her interests, needs and talents. Teachers will get to know individual learning styles and offer an environment that greets each child with possibility. This includes understanding and respecting the cultures and socio-economic backgrounds of each child. This includes following school policies on positive touch and positive language.

• Lead Circle times that are rhythmic, dynamic, and meaningful. These must be planned and executed every day.

• Build a community of children where each can develop her or his voices in building relationships, resolving challenges, and exploring the possibilities of working together.

• Provide on-site childcare and learning experiences to children 0 to school aged children. Teachers must be confident is leading activities and caring for up to

8-12 children alone, and up to 41/72 children with teacher assistants and interns.

• Lead daily activities so that children can explore new ways of moving their bodies, creating, and interacting, our school(s) encourage(s) each child to explore, interact, play, and unfold their spirit.

• Lead daily opening traditions that may include a welcoming song, a movement game, and a greeting that names each child.

• Have an ability to work with transitions gracefully. At once school site we move from classroom to classroom to explore dynamic learning spaces. Our hallways that we pass through become opportunities for so much learning!

• Design environment and experiences in response to children’s curiosity and creative impulses. Supporting the projects and ideas that emerge from the children in the community will be a central element of the program.

• When disciplining children, redirection will be the primary method used. Positive Discipline methods are embraced and the Director develops the staffs’

understanding of this technique through discussions and teacher training manual.

Maintain a Safe and Inspiring Child Development Environment

• Teachers ensure completion of daily cleaning tasks and safety checks to ensure the environment is safe. Cleaning checklists must be completed daily.

• Teachers communicate needs for supplies or repairs to Directors and will often be asked to follow through with troubleshooting those repairs. The goal is to work as a community.

• Music played in the center should always be played quietly enough that the sound of children’s voices is easily heard over the music. Music must be child appropriate. The use of recorded music is limited. The playing of instruments and/ or singing of songs is highly encouraged.

• During naptime, children must rest on mats (head to foot). Mats must be returned to storage after naptime. All mats must be covered with a sheet and encased in plastic. Sheets must be washed regularly.

• Teachers ensure staff and students use of universal precautions to reduce the spreading of germs by washing hands frequently, sanitizing surfaces and toys after children leave each day, and wearing gloves during diaper changes. Teachers also teach children basics of cleanliness.

• Teachers help maintain the quality of each play space. Toys that are worn, broken, or missing pieces shall be removed. At day’s end each day, teachers must return each play space to order, preferably by guiding the community of children in restoring the environment.

Orient New Families

• Teachers help educate parents about center policies such as sickness policy, participation guidelines, and drop off and pick up. Teachers also dialog with parents to clarify the structure and philosophies of Artenia Beast’s Academy of Play and Whimsy as a school centered on child choice and play based learning.

• Teachers ensure cubbies are maintained and stocked by parents.

• Teachers assist with orienting families to the center.

Train and Develop Staff, Parents and Volunteers

• Teachers oversee the checking in and checking out of children, ensuring authorized caregivers are picking children up.

• Teachers help oversee all child development staff and interns to ensure attention to children is prioritized. Teachers also assist director in reinforcing philosophies and center approaches that are aligned with school philosophy.

• Teachers will participate in weekly hourly staff meetings, design emergent curriculum, and on rotation facilitate monthly staff meetings with colleagues to ensure program quality. Our school embraces a collaborative model of planning and delivering a powerful program. Teachers are also expected to plan individual curriculum that is modified for the age and development group(s). We oared ourselves in overcoming obstacles and supporting one another.

Requirements

• Experience working with children between the ages of 0 and 6 (and older if working in after school component.

• Experience working in a early childhood classroom

• MUST HAVE THE 12 CORE ECE UNITS REQUIRED BY LICENSING (no exceptions)

• Must have current CPR and be responsible for renewal every two years as required by State Licensing.

• Must have immunizations required by the Health Department: TB clearance, Measles immunity/Boosters.

• A commitment to playfulness, warmth, gentle discipline and providing children with endless opportunities to explore. We are looking for teachers with a passion for the possibilities of teaching children and creating powerful environments to support learning and exploration.

• A willingness to expand expertise in the field through reading articles, attendance of conferences and workshops on Early Childhood Education.

The Program Assistant position is someone who is self-motivated and can work at times with minimal direction. Duties and Responsibilities:

Administrative Duties:

• Provide administrative support including welcoming visitors, receiving incoming calls, and providing information to callers, you are the public’s first interaction.

• Opens the office daily, checks answering machine and returns calls. Responds to all telephone and electronic (fax and email) inquiries or expedites messages to appropriate departments as needed.

• Responsible for processing registrations and following up with attendees regarding additional information, payment options as needed. Coordinates non-member communication with Membership head and tracks registration totals on a weekly basis.

• Responsible for monitoring, tracking and ordering supplies for office, including but not limited to kitchen essentials, copy machine ink, stamps, shipping products etc, including decorating office for holidays.

• Maintains membership database. This includes data entry of new contacts in the database, and responsible for quality control of profiles.

• Provides additional administrative duties including setting up conference calls, photocopying, faxing, mailing and other tasks as assigned.

• Responsible for general office upkeep, cleaning kitchen as needed, watering plants, setting up and cleaning for meetings as needed.

• Responsible for assisting in preparation and compiling materials for meetings, trainings and conferences, including but not limited to nametags, registrations sheets and mailing materials.

Internal Communications:

• Takes notes and minutes as needed for internal and committee meetings. Organizes action items into our project management software.

• Maintains a community calendar of events to identify state and sister organization trainings, meetings and conferences.

• Provides a weekly website audit report to ensure accuracy of information to Professional Development Coordinator.

• Maintains the “unsubscribe” listserv.

Mission Growth and Support:

• Provides a bi-monthly report to the Director of Policy and Education highlighting possible new sponsor relationships.

• Provides a bi-monthly report to the Director of Professional Development and Innovations highlighting possible new funding opportunities.

• Distributes LOIs and additional communications as directed.

• Supports list-serves and social media as directed.

Other Duties to Support the Strategic Direction of the Association as Assigned.

Qualifications:

• Strong customer service skills and experience, including excellent organizational, time management, interpersonal, detail orientation, and written and verbal communication skills.

EXPECTED HOURLY COMMITMENT: Part time. ~8 hours/week  COMPENSATION: $13.00/hour. 

SCHEDULE: Work schedule is 7:30am-12:30pm Saturdays +1-2 hours/week at various outreach sites at variable times (flexible, but usually during regular weekday business hours) and additional administrative tasks that can be completed from home. [Please note early morning start time. You must be a morning person that can arrive on time]

LOCATION: Most work will take place at the Auburn Old Town Courthouse Farmers’ Market: 150 Auburn Folsom Road, Auburn, CA START DATE: Immediately  

Alchemist CDC (a 501c3 non-profit organization) (www.alchemistcdc.org) is implementing Calfresh (formerly known as Food Stamps) EBT payment processing at the Auburn Market, utilizing a scrip system. The CalFresh program offers qualifying lower income individuals financial assistance in purchasing food for themselves and their families. This effort aligns with Alchemist CDC's vision of vibrant, equitable, healthy and diverse communities. Farmers' Markets are a great asset to communities, and can lead to improved health for area residents. By making it easier for lower-income populations to purchase food at farmers' markets, these community assets will become more equitable and accessible to all individuals.

 This job provides an opportunity to learn more about food access and nutrition issues, engage directly with low-income individuals and small to midsize farmers.

 

MAJOR TASKS:

➢ Ensure vendor and customer compliance with federal guidelines for accepting CalFresh and Market Match incentives.

➢ Setup, staff and take down CalFresh scrip distribution booth weekly at Auburn farmers' market.

➢ Promote participation in the program amongst eligible vendors at the market.

➢ Inform customers about the Market Match incentive program.

➢ Carry out community outreach tasks by building connections with local service organizations and community facilities. 

➢Complete sales and customer tracking forms.

 

SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:

➢ Must be fluent in spoken and written English (bi-lingual in Spanish a plus.)  

➢ Must be courteous and outgoing, and enjoy meeting and talking with new people.

➢ Basic math skills are very important.

➢ Detail oriented and highly organized.

➢ Self-motivated with good work habits.  ➢Able to stay on task without constant supervision.

➢ Must have reliable verifiable transportation. ➢Must be able to lift 30 lbs.

➢Familiarity with Auburn, its geography, demographics and community resources is beneficial. 

➢Must be computer literate.  

➢ Experience with MS Excel is beneficial, but not required.  

➢You will be required to store the booth equipment during the week between market days (fits in a ~3x3 ft. space) and transport it to/from the market using your own vehicle (easily fits in most compact cars).  [1 pop-up canopy, small folding table, storage bin]
