Bikery Co-Coordinator

About Cycles of Change: Cycles of Change is a 22 year old, collectively run, non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of East Bay residents by providing a variety of bicycle programs and resources for youth and adults. Please visit: to find out more about us. 

About the Bikery: The Bikery is a Cycles of Change, nonprofit community bike shop. We are committed to making bikes accessible to everyone. We have a range of affordable used bikes for sale, offer low cost repairs, and host classes and community events. We also have a repair space where folks can work on their own bike, or find out about Earn-A-Bike opportunities. 

Who we are: The Bikery is a collective of Oakland-based educators of color, centering the leadership of youth, women, queer and trans people, and folks rooted in the Bay Area. We work together with interns from local high schools to develop job skills in bike mechanics, transportation access, micro-business and experience with collective leadership, community organizing, and restorative justice. 

About the position: Cycles of Change seeks a self-directed, organized bike enthusiast who understands our program vision and values. Cooperative working skills are a must, as they will be co-coordinating the program collaboratively. Candidate must have demonstrated commitment to working in communities of color, as well as familiarity with health and safety issues that disproportionately affect these communities.    

Preferred Qualifications:


  • One year experience in retail management, with experience in customer service and/or inventory management;

  • Experience in youth development work as an educator, mentor or collaborator;

  • Certification in professional bicycle mechanics or proficiency in all aspects of bicycle building and repairs with the exception of hydraulic shocks and hydraulic disc brakes willingness to learn or improve bicycle mechanics skills as needed to carry out program needs; 

  • Experience working in a bicycle shop setting;  

  • Strong organizational skills, ability to take on and carry projects to completion;

  • Excellent professionalism and communication skills with coworkers, partnering agencies, community partners, and the public;

  • Proficiency with Gmail, Microsoft Word, and Excel or similar programs;

  • Ability to adequately observe participants in activities, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate management techniques;

  • Nonviolent communication, giving and receiving constructive criticism, and active listening skills;

  • Ability to work in high capacity, fast-paced, often chaotic environment;

  • Quick decision-making and problem-solving skills;

  • Excellent customer service with a strong emphasis on cultural competency;

  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in a emergency situation;

  • Proficiency in Spanish, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Khmer, Mien, or other languages spoken in the area;

Responsibilities (in collaboration with other co-coordinators):


  • Staff and operate retail and community aspects of the bike shop.

  • Outreach and marketing

  • Maintain, monitor, and report on financial status of retail endeavors.

  • Manage and train youth interns, staff and volunteers.

  • Participate on the Cycles of Change Collective and administrative committees, and interface with Board Members, funders, and public to meet all requirements, submit reports, and update all parties on the program’s status.

Organizational Commitment:


  • An understanding of, and respect for, the Bikery and Cycles of Changes’ values

  • Complete peer reviews as directed by the Human Resources Committee

  • Maintain a high level of communication with program staff

  • Maintain a supportive and respectful work environment, for staff and public

Compensation and Benefits:   16-36 hours per week.  $23-25 per hour DOE.

  • Pay is reviewed (and may increase) after 60 days of employment and at least annually thereafter

Position Summary


This position is responsible for the assembly, repair and tuning of bicycles including all related interactions with customers.


Summary of Role and Responsibilities


· Complete assembly of bicycles, including mounting of accessories and attachment parts and setting work for gear and brake systems


· Test drive of bicycle by using check list


· Inspect bicycles (new and when turned in for service) and repair as appropriate, including the exchange of worn parts of gear and brake systems


· Provide customer support (service and claim), including selling of bike components


· Coordinate and maintain service contracts


· Check/control and prepare all manufactured parts, components and additional equipment for dimensional accuracy and quality as well as functionality and ensure alignment with work orders


· Conversion of components and additional equipment


· Control screws with torque as specified


· May crop chains and cable shifts for assembly


· May use and maintain cutting machinery


· Consult with colleagues and supervisor for problem resolution and ensuring parts are in sufficient supply


· Record defects and complaints


· Maintain safe and clean work area

Work Environment

Lead Bike Technician and Service Manager


Do you consider yourself a wheel building master, suspension expert and custom bike building guru? Want to get the best pay in the industry guaranteed? We are looking for a professional Lead Bicycle Mechanic who has over 5+ years experience working as a mechanic in a fast paced bike shop. This position requires the ability to work on all types of bikes from entry level to high end bikes, with an emphasis on wheel builds, suspension service and custom bike builds. Excellent communication skills and patience working with the public is a must. Position is available at our Poway location.


 


Responsibilities



  • Wheel truing

  • Servicing suspension

  • All high end service including all Full Descender tune-ups

  • Consulting and executing custom bike builds with extreme precision

  • Assist with everyday service board to include:

    • Carry out minor repairs (ie changing flats)

    • Repairing and/or replacing damaged or worn out parts

    • fitting accessories (lights, pannier racks or cycle computers

    • Carrying out routine safety checks

    • Cleaning, degreasing and lubricating bicycles and components





  • Diagnose faults, damage and wear to give accurate estimates to customers, and educating them on and whether repairs are essential or recommended

  • Creating service tickets on POS

  • Fill out detailed records on services that have been performed

  • Assemble new bikes and quality check builds before handing off to customers

  • Educate customers on additional products they may need in addition to their bike

  • Educate customers on how to use and maintain their bike

  • Provide excellent communication with customers in-person, via phone and email


Qualifications



  • Extensive knowledge of the bicycle industry: manufacturers, parts, accessories, etc.

  • Passion for bicycles

  • Team player and have a great attitude

  • Ability to go above and beyond for the customer

  • Ability to complete full tune-ups/bike builds as well as install, repair, service, test and troubleshoot problems

  • Ability to effectively manage time and takes initiative to utilize downtime

  • Ability to work flexible hours and work around a changing schedule (40 hours/week and weekends)

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and diagnostic skills

  • Ability to work independently without much supervision

  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job which include bending, lifting heavy equipment and working in confined spaces

FLX is the fastest growing E Bike Company on the planet - coming off of a stunning record setting $13.3M Indiegogo crowdfunding (during Covid!) of its "Babymaker" stealth road E Bike with belt drive. Job Summary


You'll be an integral part in the future of FLX bikes. With your skilled hand as our bike mechanic, we can ensure that any FLX bike that comes in to the shop is performing in peak condition!


Because our focus is on squeezing the most fun out of electric bikes, we're looking for some fun loving people for this role! Tell us about your hobbies, what excites you, or some trouble you've been in on a misadventure!

Responsibilities and Duties


Have FUN!


Finish assembly of new bikes from cartons


Service customers bikes


Troubleshoot and solve any bike related questions or issues


Ensure all bikes on site are performing at the highest capacity


Join the team for group rides and events


Dependable, reliable and trustworthy


Friendly and professional – explain and educate customers in a helpful way


Interest in learning – become the subject matter expert people rely on


Above all, love what you do, have some fun with us, and let that shine through your work!

Adept at bicycle mechanical systems, maintenance, repair and assembly


Take pride in your work


Organized, respectful and good with customers
