MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHER POSITION
Opportunity starting Fall of 2021. Alta Vista seeks dynamic Science teachers for grades 6-8. AVS Middle School offers students and their families courses designed to scaffold skills and build long-term competencies. We are seeking an experienced, energetic, learner-centric teacher, eager to help with the development of +STEAM and inquiry-based curriculum.
The teacher will effectively and collaboratively design a learning experience that fosters creative problem-solving. In addition, the teacher will promote a positive and responsive classroom culture. Strong communication skills and professional ethics are essential. Additional responsibilities include: participating in professional development and school committees, leading an after school club once a week, and advising a small group of students as well as various daily duties on a rotating basis. Educators with experience working with middle school students, interest in curriculum development, and an inquiry-based, hands-on approach to teaching are strongly encouraged to apply.
Traits and Requirements:
Alta Vista is committed to being a safe and welcoming place for all families, students, and faculty. The Alta Vista School does not discriminate against employees on the basis of race, color, religious creed, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status or disability.
Founded in San Francisco in 2010 as an inquiry-based STEAM program, Alta Vista is in an exciting period of transition—from tenacious start-up to a stable educational institution serving approximately 300 students across two campuses. The Middle School program, founded four years ago, graduated its first eighth-grade class in 2018.
Alta Vista School encourages students to go beyond a strong academic foundation to pursue their passions with the help of our community. Faculty, administrators, and families believe experiences and hands-on activities are the best practice for meaningful learning. Alta Vista educators benefit from small class sizes and are intentional in their instruction. Teachers serve as guides for students as they explore, observe, predict, measure, and analyze for themselves in an inquiry-based journey of discovery and knowledge-making. Likewise, AVS teachers are serious about play. We love learning alongside our students, believing that children learn better in joyous, authentic settings. Most important to the AVS approach is a foundation rooted in the scientific method and a belief that science and technology, guided by the arts, can be leveraged to benefit all. At AVS, students learn to embrace technology and to apply principles of design-thinking as powerful tools for innovation. Technology is thoughtfully integrated into each classroom.
