Paula J. Harrell is a San Francisco native and founder of P. Harrell Wines. She is the daughter of an immigrant mother from Panama and an American military father, who raised her and her four siblings and built a series of thriving residential care facilities in San Francisco. Paula obtained a BA from UCLA, during which time she studied abroad in Madrid, Spain, where her interest in wine began. After completing her undergraduate studies, she returned to San Francisco where she pursued and received a MBA in Small Business Management & Entrepreneurship from SF State University. She then spent many years assisting her father with the family run business, in addition to beginning what would turn out to be a long standing career in Real Estate Investing and Mortgage Finance.
Though real estate was her trade, her love for wine expanded and she began an exploration through the wine countries of California and around the world. And eventually, after over 15 years of indulging in the wine culture as a hobby, her long standing passion and appreciation for all things wine led her to make her own and start a private wine label which launched in November, 2015. Her wines are an overall tribute to her family’s legacy, its dedication to community, friendship, cultural heritage & one another and in paying homage, she has named her wines after locations and family members that hold special meaning to her family’s life and business.
Paula’s Zinfandel is named after her childhood home, THREE FIFTEEN Santa Ana Avenue in San Francisco, California; a magical melting pot of family, friends, laughter and mutual support. While enjoying many visitors in her family home, she formed exceptional friendships & strengthened family bonds that continue to nourish her and fuel the pursuit of her passion: crafting beautiful wines. This Zinfandel is a full bodied & fruit driven wine, supported by layers of vanilla, cinnamon, clove and a hint of white pepper. Indeed this is a classic Dry Creek Zinfandel, but in its abundance of diverse flavors reminds her of the creative and fulfilling experiences found at 315 Santa Ana Avenue.
The Dry Riesling, HAIGHT STREET, refers to the property located at 940 Haight Street, San Francisco. Her father and grandmother built this property from the ground up in 1969 and it was the cornerstone of their business. This wine is as bold and driven in its complexity and flavor as they were in their business. Opening with a bouquet of peach blossom and passion fruit on the nose, the wine has a palate full of tropical fruit, lemon grass and honeydew; in her mind, a worthy tribute to their legacy.
Her third wine, P.J. Rose, represents the first and middle initials of her name, Paula Jean; I was named after her parents, Paul & Jean. This wine reflects her passion and personality while giving credit to the people who helped me become the woman I am today. P.J. Rose is full of dynamic aromas and flavors. On the nose you get ripe strawberry, cranberry and rhubarb with wonderful hints of orange blossom and rose petal. The palate is filled with strawberry, cranberry, orange zest and a touch of star anise which is carried through with a velvety mouthfeel and delicate acidity to complete a long, gentle finish.
Paula describes her passion….”The creation of P. Harrell Wines has emerged from my long standing passion and appreciation for wine, from the smell of freshly picked grapes after a successful harvest to sampling wines in barrel, and ultimately indulging in the enchanting wine culture with others. I love all things wine because it is one of those simple pleasures that seamlessly intertwine people from ALL walks of life, no matter the color, gender, or background, creating genuine friendships & connections.”
It's a wine label and we do lots of fun wine events! It's growing and there is opportunity for growth!
