The San Francisco Maritime National Park Association (SFMNPA) Nonprofit is hiring for the position of Educator at the historical World War II American submarine USS Pampanito. Pampanito Educator leads groups of visitors through the submarine and imparts the history and science of the USS Pampanito as well as World War II maritime history in an exciting and dynamic method. These visitors are primarily youth and school groups whose ages range from 7 to 17 along with attending adults and teachers. Groups visit in a variety of settings, an overnight encampment, a science day program as well as an evening program. The primary educational program takes place in the evening where the attending group will stay overnight on the USS Pampanito.
The responsibility of the Pampanito Educator is to greet the group upon arrival, facilitate basic logistical paperwork on the composition and special needs of the group, conduct a basic tour of the vessel and artifacts, and properly instruct the group on emergency drills and set up the USS Pampanito for an overnight stay. The day and evening science programs are directly focused upon the science of submarines. Educators are responsible for the set-up, maintenance and storing of educational materials where the students work hands on to discover how periscopes, batteries, buoyancy, sonar and navigation function aboard a submarine. Educators directly instruct and facilitate the student’s understanding in a timely and effective way.
-High School diploma, Associate's/Bachelor's degree or current progress on Associate's/Bachelor's
-Prior experience working with youth age groups from 7 to 17 -Effective time management
-Excellent public speaking skills -Interest in Maritime and World War II history
-Attention to detail and accuracy -Willingness to study historical materials Key Responsibilities
-Actively involve visitors in interpretation of Pampanito as a historical artifact
-Sensitive to visitor’s differences (learning style, cultural backgrounds, age levels, etc)
-Preparing and maintaining educational materials -Leading and supporting visitors in safe manner through USS Pampanito and the pier
-Preparing and submitting logistical paperwork regarding visiting group-Other duties as assigned by the SFMNPA
-Evening Programs take place 6.30pm to 10.30pm
-Day Science Programs take place 10:00am to 2:00pm
-Overnight Science programs take place 3:00pm to 9:00pm Benefits and Compensation
