Job Description

Folio Books in Noe Valley is hiring!

We’re a small bookstore in a neighborhood of readers, serving our community by creating a warm, welcoming environment for everyone who comes through the door.

Currently we have a couple of positions to fill - a Children’s Specialist and a part-time weekend bookseller. Both are primarily frontline bookseller positions.

Our favorite booksellers are avid readers. They love books and being around books, but more than that, they are on a mission to share that passion with others. To them, the satisfaction of playing matchmaker between a reader and a book can’t be equaled.

The physical requirements of bookselling involve standing for long periods of time, repetitive work at computers, bending, stretching, carrying, and lifting. Technological requirements include extensive use of a computer POS system and browser-based tasks such as searching and using google docs.  Most of any bookseller’s day is spent answering customers’ questions, ringing up sales, gift-wrapping, shelving books, and straightening/organizing.

The Children’s Specialist is a frontline bookseller who will focus on our children’s sections aimed at readers from babies to teens. A background working with kids in a bookstore, library, or educational setting is helpful. You should be able to talk comfortably with children (and their adults) and understand child development and reading levels well enough to make appropriate recommendations.  You’d help with organizing the section, creating displays, choosing inventory, and helping with our middle-readers book club and other children’s programming.

Total hours per week and specific schedule for both positions will be determined during the hiring process.

If you’re interested, please DON’T call or come by the store, but please DO reply to this ad. Include a cover letter and attach (or paste in) a resume. Tell us your weekly availability (which days/shifts you are available, which days/shifts you are not), Tell us about a bit about your reading life and specifically a book or two you’ve enjoyed recently.  Additionally, if you are interested in the Children’s Specialist job, please answer the following:

  1. Who are 2-3 current children’s book authors or illustrators you enjoy and why?
  2. What’s a book you’d recommend to a 10-year-old who likes action but doesn’t enjoy fantasy?
  3. What book would you bring to a baby shower if you were asked for a gift to build the baby’s future library?
