Job Description

  Camp Davis is Nashville’s outstanding Jewish Day Camp serving campers entering Kindergarten through 8th grade. At Camp Davis, we focus on universal Jewish values (respect, community, growth, and compassion) and embrace EVERYONE from all backgrounds, faiths, and families.  A summer at Camp Davis is a life-changing experience not only for our campers, but our staff as well. Camp Davis staff members are motivated, compassionate, and professional - and they certainly know how to have a good time. The Music Specialist’s primary responsibility is organizing and initiating quality music lessons within the Camp Davis traditional camp. These activity sessions run for 30-60 minute with groups of 10 to 20 campers by age group grades Kindergarten – 6th. Activities are to be age-appropriate and follow inclusive practices work together with the Camp Davis Inclusion Staff to modify lessons. In addition to activity rotations, the Music Specialist is also required to plan and lead a free choice period for mixed ages of campers Monday – Thursday each week.  The Music Specialist is the primary song leader by bringing songs to Camp Davis community gatherings including morning ruach (spirit) circle, closing ruach circle, and Shabbat. Specialists will also be responsible for camper care and helping ensure camper safety and wellbeing throughout the summer. This Specialist will serve as a role model, coach, mentor, and instructor to all campers with the greater goal to help all campers grow, learn new skills, form friendships, and most importantly – HAVE FUN! Responsibilities   

  • Under the direction of the Camp      Director, work ahead of the start of the season on the lesson plan.
  • Construct and execute all Music      activities to be incorporated with Camp Davis’ weekly themes and values.
  • Organize materials and/or      equipment for all Music activities.
  • Provide direct camper care,      prioritizing the physical, social, emotional health-safety and well-being      of each individual camper.
  • Demonstrate the expectations we      set for each other and our campers.
  • Create an atmosphere of energy      and excitement about music.
  • Design activity plans that are      modified to different age groups and inclusive of campers with special      needs; work with appropriate staff member to make this happen (make      modifications to create accessibility).
  • Facilitate activities in a way      that fosters the development of creativity, self-expression, positive      social relationships, conflict resolution skills, etc.
  • Support campers in developing      positive attitudes towards learning new skills and refining old ones.
  • Responsible for the caring of      and maintenance of equipment, supplies and property of the Gordon JCC.
  • Lead and teach songs to the      whole camp during all camp gatherings such as Morning Circle, Closing      Circle, and Shabbat. 
  • Lead music activities and      engage campers and staff in celebrating our camp community, mission, and      values, through artistic learning opportunities.
  • Lead music activities with      staff during staff training.
  • Assist with other camp      responsibilities deemed necessary by the Camp Director/Assistant Camp      Director.
  • Participate in staff training      prior to camp and weekly staff meetings either before or after camp hours      as determined by Camp Director.

Qualifications Education/Qualifications/Certifications  

  • Proficient and comfortable with      leading large groups in singing
  • Ability to play guitar while      song leading strongly preferred. 
  • At least one year of experience      working with children preferred (previous camp experience preferred).
  • Must be high-energy,      enthusiastic, creative, and open-minded!
  • Must be available for staff      training May 26 – 29th, 2020.
