Job Description

Hey there! Blue Bear School of Music (the original school of rock 'n' roll) needs fun and engaging music teachers for kids' classes!

We're looking for instructors to teach elementary-aged children (K-5th) in our after-school programs. The classes are primarily of the sing-along, dance-along, jam-a-long type for the budding young music lover. Students sing children’s songs, classic and contemporary songs, and use simple instruments, movements, and props such as shakers, sticks, drums, and scarves to have fun with the songs. The students get a sense of rhythm, melody, dynamics, and sharing, and have fun in the process. Teachers are provided a class curriculum outline but are free to use both their own resources and our YouTube channel of teacher songs for inspiration (the channel is mostly for the younger kid classes).

Most classes occur between the hours of 2PM and 5PM and happen at locations in San Francisco. We currently need someone on paired days of Mon/Wed and Tues/Thurs from around 3 to around 4pm at schools in the Richmond and Sunset districts of San Francisco. There will be no more than 10 kids in the class, with often two adult supervisors in the room to assist with classroom management. (Typical class size is 8 kids). Other locations pop up frequently, so there is a possibility for additional teaching gigs.

This is a contractor position where new teachers start at $60 for classes lasting up to an hour (including the minimal prep, set up, and breakdown required to teach a class). A background check is required for all contract employees, and some locations require a TB test (taken within the last 2 years) and Livescan fingerprinting (fee reimbursable by Blue Bear). To be clear, we are not looking for master musicians with experience in teaching private lessons to a child or two. We need solid, experienced teachers who can quickly and easily engage groups of students that are learning and having fun with basic music concepts. We need someone who can think on the fly and roll with transitions, and who can keep up to 10 squirrelly kids excited, but under control, in a fun musical experience!

WE NEED ENGAGING, CHARISMATIC MUSICIAN EDUCATORS!

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • MUST HAVE AN EXCITING AND ENGAGING PERSONALITY!
  • THOROUGH UNDERSTANDING OF MUSIC CONCEPTS AND PROFICIENCY IN AT LEAST ONE INSTRUMENT (PREFERABLY GUITAR).
  • AN ABILITY TO THINK FAST AND MODIFY CURRICULUM AND LESSONS ON THE FLY TO KEEP KIDS ENGAGED AND HAVING FUN!
  • AN EXTREMELY SKILLED LEVEL OF CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
  • MUST BE ABLE TO KEEP EXCITEMENT BUT FOCUS IT TO THE ACTIVITY AT HAND!
  • PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY A MUST
  • MUST BE PUNCTUAL AND PROFESSIONAL AT ALL TIMES

REQUIRED EDUCATION

-MINIMUM OF 2 YEARS OF PROFESSIONAL KIDS GROUP INSTRUCTION.

-2 YEARS OR MORE OF EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT PREFERRED.

-SELF TAUGHT MUSICIANS OK, HOWEVER APPLICANT NEEDS TO FULLY UNDERSTAND MUSICAL CONCEPTS AND BE ABLE TO CONVEY THEM TO KIDS.

Business Overview

Our Story

Non-profit organization Blue Bear School of Music was founded as “Blue Bear Waltzes School of Genuine Music” in the summer of 1971 by a rock band called “Wolfgang & Strauss” – “Wolfgang” was a dog, and “Strauss,” two brothers in the band. Before moving to San Francisco to make their fame and fortune (and to found a music school), they lived in Northern California on the Bear River. When naming the school, the brothers Strauss whimsically recalled Johann Strauss’s “Blue Danube Waltz,” substituting the Bear River for the Danube, and the rest is history.

For a period in the mid-’70s, when the founding members moved on, Blue Bear was run by a co-operative of teachers and students. In 1978 operations moved from the original storefront on Ocean Avenue to Fort Mason Center, where Blue Bear has thrived and evolved to its current state of more than 850 music-loving students per quarter.

Blue Bear’s current Board of Trustees and Staff includes former “Wolfgang & Strauss” members Steve Savage (Board President) and Richard Strauss along with Electric Orchestra & Folk Chorus (and Blue Bear Association) member Bonnie Hayes. Day-to-day operations are under the direction of Dennis Criteser, a former student who has been associated with the school for 35+ years.

Why Work With Us?

Blue Bear School of Music looks to create a musical and instructional environment that assists all involved- from the kids, the parents, and the site providers, to the teacher and our humble non profit music school.
