Job Description

Hey all you budding technical folks, here's the prospect:  SBTC is a non-profit.  We help other non-profits with technology.  You get to feel good about productive work while applying your technical skills, and learning new stuff.

 

This is an awesome opportunity to college students, folks with other part time positions, and people who may have other constraints on their time.  Our organization also has many folks who are semi-retired, and seeking to keep busy and give back with their time.  So, here's what we're doing:

 

SBTC supports dozens of schools and other non-profits on a recurring basis.  We have a great team of field technicians to help with that.  But they aren't there every moment of every day, so we need folks who will work out of our local help desk to provide those users with support.  We get a lot of calls for password resets, mapping drives, and similar requests.

 

We also support PowerSchool, a student information system, for well over a hundred schools.  This is where we get into application support, as well as data analytics, in filling requests for schools and other organizations.  We help end users with the product, as well as supporting the back end, and customization, so there's even some coding going on.

 

If you're into bullet points:

 

  • Provide technical support and guidance to end users with computer software, hardware or system problems.
  • Typical hardware and software to be worked on may include interactive boards (Smart, Promethean, other), document cameras, Apple and Android tablets, Windows and Apple desktops and laptops, printers, etc that may commonly be found in schools and office environments.
  • Installs or assists service personnel in installation of hardware and peripheral components such as monitors, keyboards, printers, and disk drives on client's premises.
  • Answer questions and resolve problems via telephone, e-mail, and web-based ticketing system.
  • Help manage end user accounts, permissions, access rights, and storage allocations.
  • Escalates to and assists network team in troubleshooting server, switch, and wireless issues.
  • Maintains documentation of all site equipment.
  • Maintain a very high degree of professionalism throughout all client and coworker interactions, in-person and written.
  • Bear in mind always that the trust and "feeling of support" from users is as important as the technical skill, and that customer service is thus as important as technology know-how.
  • Escalate tasks according to SBTC guidelines for networking, web, cabling, and other projects.

 

Qualifications

  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal interaction skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Several years in a technical field or educational program is preferred, to demonstrate a technical and engineering mindset
  • Customer service experience and qualifications are strongly encouraged

 

Additional information

LOCATIONS: Collectively, SBTC serves all of Lake and Cook counties in Illinois.  The positions we're most interest in filling right now are in Lake County and Northern Cook County, regularly working from our Des Plaines office.  So if you're in Des Plaines, Palatine, Arlington Heights, Glenview, Skokie, Niles, Wheeling, Park Ridge, Buffalo Grove, or similar towns up this way, this will be a good fit geographically.
