Job Description

Code for America builds technology to help government services work for the people who need them most.

We're excited to launch our first apprenticeship program cohort to provide a pathway for junior technical talent to get on the job training. We're looking for passionate, mission driven folks who are looking for opportunities to grow their skills at Code for America. The program is six months and full time starting in early June 2018.

You may be a fit for this program if:

• You're returning to the workforce and want to get up-to-date on your data analysis skills
• You're early in your career and looking to gain data analysis experience related to government programs or services
• You are in a research or data-intensive job or graduate program and want to explore moving into civic tech

Our ideal apprentice has a solid foundation in data analysis and technology, is action-oriented and eager to learn, and shares our passion for the Code for America mission and our focus on helping our users. We mostly work with R, but only require that you have experience with any statistics suite. You'll learn to confidently investigate and answer questions with data as you progress through your apprenticeship.

So, what do we do?

Our teams work on a variety of problems facing people at risk of persistent poverty and incarceration, including food security, healthcare, employment, and criminal justice reform. We work hand in hand with public servants to identify and remove barriers within these systems so people can get the services they need. We do this by taking a user-centered, data-driven, and iterative approach to service delivery, and we believe this approach can be a massive force for social good.

Here are some of the things you'll do at Code for America:
• Participate fully in all team activities.
• Learn about service delivery challenges in a policy area and how a user-centered, data-driven, iterative approach to technology can help.
• Assist in measuring how much CFA is contributing to the well-being of citizens and the success of government partners.
• Answer questions about the operation of CFA services
• Use a wide variety of data sources to identify and evaluate potential features in CFA services.
• Work to standardize and automate analyses that are required for monitoring the success of various programs.

As an incoming apprentice, we expect you to have the following skills:
• You have a passion for our mission of making government services better for people who need them most.
• You are able to quickly learn new technologies and practices.
• You've had some exposure to pandas, R, or another statistics suite.
• You are good at understanding and refining questions.
• You are detail-oriented and a critical thinker.
• You have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• You are fundamentally curious and empathetic.
• You are comfortable asking for help and enjoy collaborating with others to refine analytical ideas and approaches.

As an outgoing apprentice, we want you to:
• Have a sense of what it's like to deliver government services, and a deep understanding of the challenges within a particular problem space.
• Be comfortable working with other data analysts, engineers, and operations staff to articulate and solve problems.
• Have a better grasp on which methods to use to address various exploratory and measurement questions.
• Easily use and interpret the results of a logistic regression in an applied context.
• Be able to use 1-2 more modern machine-learning techniques in order to predict outcomes.
• Have improved your ability to communicate your methods and findings to non-experts.
• Have gained confidence in your ability to learn new methods and improvise tools for cleaning, structuring, and managing data.
