ABC measures progress by a child’s ability to use skills taught in a generalized and spontaneous manner across people, settings, activities, and materials. Research indicates that children who only demonstrate targeted skills with a high level of adult prompting in structured intervention activities may not “generalize” these skills to everyday life. It can also appear that a child is making rapid progress under such highly-controlled conditions. For a child’s long-term progress, it is critical that the child is able to initiate and sustain independent, active participation in daily interactions and social activities. Therefore, we would not consider a goal “met” until a child demonstrates the targeted skillspontaneously or independently in typical everyday activities, situations, tasks and social interactions.
