Leslie Ceramic Supply Company was founded in 1946 by Rayer and Leslie Toki, in response to the needs of an expanding community of San Francisco Bay Area potters and ceramic artists. This family business became a leading supplier of ceramic materials in Northern California. When his parents retired, son John Toki ran the company and gained renown in his own right as a working artist, published author and educator. His large scale ceramic works have gained international recognition. Under John's reign, Leslie Ceramic Supply Company developed their own line of glazes and clays.
In 2015, John Toki retired from Leslies to pursue his artistic ventures and sold the company to Arnie Bernstein. Bernstein merged the company with his company, Aftosa, which has been in business for 32 years. Aftosa specializes in products to partner with artists and is mostly an ecommerce company. At the same time, to make things more interesting, Bernstein also acquired Ceramics & Crafts Co. of San Francisco. He merged all three businesses under one roof located just a few miles away from Berkeley and San Francisco to Richmond, CA.
The new company continues to bear the names and the logo of Leslie's, now called Leslie Ceramic & Crafts Supply. The new company offers an expanded space and layout and is committed to maintaining the quality products and expertise of the original companies. To this end, many of the former Leslies and Ceramics & Crafts Supply Co employees are retained.
