Our Story

Opened in July 2019 by husband-and-wife couple Josiah Baldivino and Stevie Stacionis (also of Bay Grape), Mama Oakland serves dinner seven nights a week, designed to feel like suppers at grandma’s house. 

Our menu consists of three courses featuring market-fresh produce offered for a $29 prix fixe: a seasonal soup or salad option; two pasta choices (gluten-free possible) including one vegetarian (vegan possible) option and one signature “Mama’s sugo” option, plus a seasonal dessert or gelato and biscotti. Mama’s sugo was the inspiration for the restaurant, based off Stacionis’ Abruzzese great grandmother’s cooked-all-day red sauce with braised pork and beef. There's also an optional menu supplement of Mama’s meatballs.

Mama hosts a user-friendly wine list, designed by Baldivino to make ordering a great wine less intimidating. Baldivino curates the wine program including affordable, accessible selections from around the world that pair easily with convivial pasta dinners, plus a short reserve list of “baller bottles” that changes frequently. “I want people to have fun picking a wine, not feel nervous, so I’m scheming a very cool page aesthetically that will get guests excited and feel empowered,” explains Baldivino. As for the global selection, “Everyone is welcome at Mama’s house; you wouldn’t tell a certain guest they don’t fit in, so in the same way, delicious wines from anywhere in the world have a place at our table.”

Baldivino and Stacionis worked with local designer Sarah Owen to dress the Mama space as Stacionis’ grandmother and great grandmother’s house looked while she was growing up. “My Ma and Mama emigrated from Abruzzo when Mama was a baby,” Stacionis says. “She lived her entire life in that same house--and was the consummate hostess. This restaurant is in her honor, so we’re using furniture and decorative pieces straight from her home. It’s super nostalgic, and I hope it makes her proud.”

Located on the northern edge of Lake Merritt in the Adams Point neighborhood of Oakland (in between Uptown and Grand Lake), Mama has quickly become a beloved community gathering spot as well as a new cornerstone of the Bay Area dining scene.
