Vida Verde was founded in 2001 by two former Teach for America classroom teachers who saw a pressing need for youth from disadvantaged communities to have meaningful educational experiences outside of the classroom. Their original vision has been carefully developed into a highly effective and acclaimed educational program. Now in its 18th year, Vida Verde has provided programs for over 11,000 low-income Bay Area students and teachers.
We are thrilled to have purchased our own educational farm property and invested in an endowment for the care of that property in 2015, purchased local housing for eight staff member in 2018, and to have raised the money to build an Education Barn on our new property (breaking ground in 2019).
After 17 years of focus on our school-year program, in July of 2018 Vida Verde ran its first ever Summer Leadership Camp for high-school-aged participants from low-income Bay Area Schools. This program is designed to provide an opportunity for participants to “go deeper” after their three day school-year experience, to serve as a pipeline for participants to grow as leaders, and to build community and understanding across Bay Area neighborhoods through the participants’ shared experience in nature and away from home.
