The Cal Mania (CalM) Program is dedicated to conducting basic and treatment research on bipolar disorder and impulsivity; as well as intervention research on impulsivity, mania, and aggression. We are interested in a set of issues that might help understand why some people develop mania when they do, and what helps people with bipolar disorder do well in life. Over the past 20 years, research by Dr. Johnson and her team members has shown that mania is often triggered by processes related to reward and goals. We are also interested in how partners of those with bipolar disorder help support their wellness. In addition to research on bipolar disorder, the Calm Program studies impulsivity, emotion, and social dominance.
