Mr. Jack McBirney returned to San Francisco in 1971 after serving as a missionary to Newfoundland, Canada. His children had to attend public school. Because of the obstacles his family met, Mr. McBirney became burdened by the lack of Christian education in the beautiful city of San Francisco.
With a vision to see, a faith to believe and courage to do so, he founded San Francisco Christian School in September of 1971. The need for this Christian education was realized by both Mr. Jack McBirney and the Board, and they prayed for 90 students to come to the school. On the very first day, 90 students came and enrolled!
Our school first began with grades K-10 on Dorland Street in the educational building at First Covenant Church. Junior and Senior High School was moved into the Calvary Baptist Church in the fall of 1972, where 11th and 12th grades were added to our program. In 1973, San Francisco Christian School’s first group of scholars graduated.
Attendance and enrollment continued to grow with each passing year. This increase called for the construction of our school on Whittier Street in 1976. Our district was incorporated into the ministry of Calvary Baptist Church in 1984. Today, we are one of the best private high schools in the San Francisco Bay Area.
One of the reasons our Christian education in San Francisco, CA has become so popular is because of our heart for missions and world evangelism. We help those in San Francisco, CA, but we also reach the uttermost parts of the world through the enrollment of non-immigrant foreign students. In the fall of 1996, San Francisco Christian School was approved by the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service to issue I‑20 forms for foreign students to attend school. Our international program reaches these students with the message of Jesus Christ so they can return to their home countries and families with the Gospel.
A focus on Christian education
San Francisco Christian School has many success stories for which to praise the Lord. Our graduates have gone on to full-time Christian service or are furthering their education at a variety of colleges and universities. Many graduates are happily occupied with secular employment and serving the Lord in local ministries.
We have an enthusiastic and capable student-body with endless potential. SFCS is considered one of the best private high schools in the area. We are thankful to God for our many teachers, administrators and parents whom the Lord has used to make this ministry possible!
