Chef Don Garrett, a native of Sonoma, began his culinary journey at the age of 15, with an apprenticeship at the world-renowned Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa, where he spent five years being taught by some of the best chefs from Europe and the Pacific Rim. During that time, he received his first exposure to the combination of cooking styles that would come to be known as “California Cuisine,” and learned to appreciate the quality of fresh, sustainable, local ingredients. Since then, with nearly three decades of hands-on leadership in some of the finest kitchens in Northern California’s Wine Country, as well as advanced coursework through the California Culinary Academy and the Education Foundation of the National Restaurant Association, Chef Garrett has been a pioneer in the development and advancement of that style of food, which he defines as “the cutting edge of international culinary techniques, blending innovative and traditional cooking styles from around the world with the best in local, organic, and sustainable ingredients.”
During the seven years he served as Executive Chef at Fountain Grove Resort and Country Club in Santa Rosa, Don won numerous awards including; The American Tasting Institute Gold Medal for USA Culinary Excellence in 2000 as well as twenty nine gold medals, fifteen silver medals, eight bronze, best of show appetizer in 1998 and 2000 in the Sonoma County Harvest Fair.
Currently Executive Chef and owner of Wine Country Artisans Catering, Chef Garrett is indulging his passion for the time-honored traditions of Italian cooking by crafting a daily assortment of stunning dishes, like fresh mozzarella and burrata, as well as hand-made gnocchi, raviolis, authentic Italian wood-fired pizza and desserts. Showcasing the amazing variety and unsurpassed quality of local producers, Chef Garrett’s commitment to local, sustainable, and organic products is a perfect pairing with his desire to provide a unique and unforgettably gourmet experience for his guests.
When he is able to pull himself away from the hustle and bustle of his busy kitchen, Chef Garrett enjoys sharing his wide range of culinary knowledge and expertise with guests, friends, and family. As a hobby, he teaches classes on high-end food preparation and performs cooking demonstrations designed to show anyone how to “unlock their inner chef.” Don also enjoys working with disadvantaged youth as well as charity events with Meals on Wheels and Redwood Food Bank and Mentoring Alliance.
