The Safe and Active Communities Branch (SACB) is the focal point for CDPH efforts in injury and violence prevention. The Injury Surveillance and Epidemiology Section (ISES) helps guide program and policy efforts by documenting and tracking the magnitude and impact of injury and violence, identifying population groups most at risk, and monitoring changes and impacts of programs and policies over time. To address the public health problem of drug overdoses, SACB is implementing an enhanced surveillance system to collect and disseminate accurate, timely, and more comprehensive data on drug overdoses in California. Proposed outcomes include: 1) Decreased delays in accessing geographically-specific data; 2) Increased access to detailed data on risk factors not available at the local level; and 3) Increased capacity to monitor trends, analyze significant changes, and display multiple data streams relevant for local surveillance and prevention planning.
