Our Story

Brief History of


Roaring ’20s: Artisan and blacksmith Dino Phillips opens a forge on Miami Beach’s 41st street, designing decorative iron gates and sculptures for the homes of wealthy Miami winter residents including the Firestones and the Vanderbilts.

1930s: Phillips turns his forge into a sophisticated restaurant and casino where regulars include Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Jackie Gleason, Walter Winchell, Arthur Godfrey and Martha Ray. The Forge’s specialty: Its flavorful, open-hearth-grilled steak.

1968 - 69: International financier Alvin Malnik purchases The Forge, guts it, and spends more than a year transforming it into an opulent restaurant that rivals the finest in Europe. In 1969, The Forge reopens as a lavish showcase for Malnik’s vast collection of art and antiques.

1970s: Forge regulars include actors Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, musician and actor Desi Arnaz, former president Richard Nixon and director Brian DePalma.

1983: Baron Philippe Rothschild gifts Malnik a collection of his turn-of-the-century bottles. This addition turns The Forge’s wine cellar into one of the finest rare-wine collections in the world. The famed Wine Cellar contains more than 300,000 vintages in an eight-room cellar within the restaurant.

1991: Shareef Malnik, Alvin’s son, becomes owner of The Forge and attracts the trendy South Beach crowd with innovations such as the Fellini-esque Wednesday night dinner disco.

1996: The Forge becomes home of the “#1 Steak in America,” according to Wine Spectator.

2000s: The Forge continues to be Miami Beach’s social epicenter, attracting A-list figures including Michael Jackson, Madonna, Al Pacino, Bill Clinton, former President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev and many other notables.

2003 - 2009: Wine Spectator awards The Forge’s wine collection with its highest honors – The Grand Award and Best of Award of Excellence. The Forge also becomes the proud recipient of the prestigious Five Star Diamond Award presented by the American Academy for Hospitality Sciences in recognition of excellence in hospitality.

April 27, 2009: Miami Beach Mayor Matti Bower proclaims this date as “The Forge Day.” Shareef Malnik was handed his fourth key to the city and the restaurant was recognized as a Miami Beach social staple for the past 40 years.

May 1, 2009: The Forge closes for renovations without announcing an anticipated re-opening date.

March 31, 2010: With the conclusion of almost a full year of extreme renovations, Shareef Malnik reveals the Miami Beach icon’s new look and approach to dinning : The Forge Restaurant | Wine Bar. A completely updated appearance, inspired farm-to-table menu and lifestyle approach to dining are all elements of The Forge’s new attitude.

May 27, 2010 The ”new” Forge receives 3.5 out of four stars (Excellent)” in its first major review by The Miami Herald. Restaurant critic Rochelle Koff titles the review “Prepare to be wowed at updated Forge”

June 8, 2010 The City of Miami Beach declares June 8, 2010 as “FORGE DAY”; the veil is lifted reveling the new façade with a ribbon cutting officially re-opening. Shareef receives his fifth key to the City from Commissioner Michael Gongora.

October 30th, 2010 Shareef Malink is honored to accept the invitation to present The Forge Restaurant | Wine Bar at an official dinner at the legendary James Beard House, New York.
