Our Story

Our History
Agape Schools Inc. was founded by Clifford E. Daugherty in 1981 to provide quality early childhood Christian education and care, with the opening of Neighborhood Christian Center (NCC) in Santa Clara and Graciela Marques-Hahn as the founding director. NCC has been successful at providing a loving and safe environment that nurtures the heart, mind, body, and soul of preschool aged children. Dr. Daugherty felt God’s call to expand the ministry of Agape Schools into San Jose and he and his wife, Kris Daugherty, opened the doors of Neighborhood Christian Preschool (NCP) in 1991 with Kris as the founding director. In 2007, Kristin Annab became the director and helped NCP transition to a new location where it is now at the Crossroads Bible Church campus in San Jose. In 2014, Kristin felt God’s call to teach at the elementary school level and in July of 2014, Julie Kennedy joined our team as director of NCP. The legacy of providing quality early childhood education and care that fosters a love for God, each other, and for learning, continues as we pave a path for additional schools in the future.

Educational Philosophy
Each student is viewed by Neighborhood Christian Preschool team members as unique and gifted by God for a special purpose. All the domains of development and learning—physical, social and emotional, and cognitive—are important and interrelated. NCP recognizes that “children’s development and learning in one domain influence and are influenced by what takes place in other domains” (NAEYC, 2014). Our program allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, physical, cognitive, and emotional strength through structured curriculum, play, enrichment, Bible, and chapel.

Qualified Early Childhood Educators
All Neighborhood Christian Center administrators, teachers, and caregivers are selected to serve as nurturing Christian role models. They are trained and certified as early childhood educators. Teachers are required to meet and maintain all early childhood education college courses in compliance with state and Neighborhood Christian requirements. Many have varied degrees including Associate of Arts, Bachelors, Masters, and other graduate degrees. Neighborhood Christian teachers are CPR and first aid certified, and are required to keep credentials current. All staff attend training as needed to keep skills refreshed. Teachers often team-teach to provide a great support system and variety in teaching styles. Neighborhood Christian Schools are supported by wonderful teachers, many of whom have served for 5 to 10 years or more.
