If you’re looking for a job that is in high demand, consider working in retail. Retail sales associates are wanted by all types of businesses from local boutiques to national chains.
As the face of the business, they’re the first people customers interact with. The retail sales associate position must combine customer service skills with a knack for sales. Their biggest priorities include customer satisfaction, and of course, selling products!
- Greet customers. A smile and a pleasant demeanor will go a long way!
- Answer customer questions. Be ready to answer any questions customers may have about products or services. Always be ready and available to offer customers assistance.
- Listen to customers. Give customers options and advice. It’s your job to help them find the perfect item.
Ring up purchases and process money. Retail associates are also in-charge of handling returns.
- Patience. You will be working long hours and interacting with countless customers on a daily basis. Customers can sometimes be difficult, but as a retail associate, you must keep your cool.
- Persuasion. A great retail sales associate is a master of persuasion.
Know your company. A thorough knowledge of your company’s merchandise and services is a must.
Formal education isn’t a necessity if you’re looking for a job in retail. However, many employers favor people with a high school diploma or GED. Retail is the perfect field for aspiring supervisors and managers. Once you’ve paid your dues in retail experience and/or obtained an associate degree, bachelor’s degree, or other credentials focusing on management, you can apply for higher positions.
