Restaurant Overview

No experience? No problem. Many restaurant novices start their careers as bussers, line cooks, or servers. Working in a restaurant opens doors to higher, better-paying roles. Before you know it, you could be on the path to your dream restaurant job as head chef or manager.

People with little restaurant experience may think restaurant jobs are easy, but it takes a lot to feed and serve hungry patrons. Those lunch and dinner rushes are no joke!

  • Customer service. It doesn’t matter if you interact directly with customers or not, overall customer satisfaction is your number one priority.
  • Answering questions. This ranges from customer questions about menus and restaurant policies to logistics.
  • Communicating with fellow restaurant workers. Teamwork will help build camaraderie and get tasks done faster.
  • Other. Responsibilities will depend on if you’re a server, line cook, sous chef, host/hostess, or a different job at a restaurant.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. To work in a hectic restaurant, you have to think fast on your feet. You are part of a system that operates to serve and feed people quickly and efficiently.
  • Multi-tasking.
  • Patience. Dealing with hungry customers can get overwhelming during busy shifts. Keeping your cool is a skill!
  • Good mental and physical health. Food service workers are on their feet for hours without a break.
  • Attention to food sanitation. Customers expect their food to be sanitary and to meet health codes.

Level of experience required for a restaurant job depends on the specific job you’re applying for. For lower level positions, formal education is likely not required. As you move up the restaurant career ladder, you’ll likely move faster with at least a high school diploma or GED credential.

If you’re looking for chef or managerial positions, business or culinary school credentials will help you stand out.
