Nail Technician Overview

A really good manicure or pedicure is a work of both art and science. Nail technicians are the professionals who work that magic combination to give every client the service they need. Generally, nail technicians work at a spa, beautifying nails or maintaining them for the health for their clients.

You could become an excellent nail technician if you’re good with your hands, love talking to people, and like to bring out the stylish side of everyone you know.

Responsibilities

  • Give nail care services. Nail technicians take care of hands and feet by cutting and shaping nails, maintaining nail beds, giving massages, and applying nail polish, acrylics or other nail art.
  • Keep tools clean. It’s important for nail technicians to sterilize their equipment and keep a sanitized station so they don’t spread infections.
  • Promote new products. Spas and salons may offer new packages or services that nail technicians encourage their clients to try.

Skills

  • Nail care techniques. Because nail technicians use specialized tools and chemicals, they need to know the correct techniques and procedures.
  • Superb customer service. In order to give clients the best experience, you’ll have to make sure they are comfortable and get the mani or pedi they came in for.
  • Dexterity and strength. The more nimble and strong your hands are, the better you’ll be at effectively performing nail services. Nail technicians should also be prepared to kneel and apply pressure during treatments.

Experience

Most spas and salons look to hire certified nail technicians, which requires an exam and training through a cosmetology or esthetician program. This training also gives you the skills to give skin and hair treatments, which can make you a more attractive hire.
